Stage 3 Manifold Conversion Question

Now before anyone jumps on my back- I've done a lot of research on the forum and elsewhere and I have found many contradicting information, including information from the guy who is helping me work on my 07' 328xi e90.

I trying to do a Stage 3 manifold conversion and I have a BMS powerbox. I originally thought I could run these 2 together but my technician and other forums say that these 2 can NOT run together and that I would need an AA tune. Is this true? Can anyone provide some more info on this?

Thanks for the help.

YOu dont need any specific piece of electronics or software to run the 3 stage intake manifold. A reflash like an AA tune would be more customized to the manifold, but you can keep your PBX, you just wont have as big of gains, but you would still get the throttle remap and a bit more power from the BMS PBX. It is absolutely possible and your car will be fine

I ran the PBX with the 3 stage manifold for a while. no issues whatsoever.

running 3IM + pbx isn't going to do anything. ATM, your car is basically not utilizing the DISA actuators. you need the AA tune to take advantage of this. If you end up getting your AA tune, running pbx along with it isn't going to do anything either.

wrong.

you still get benefit of the DISA, even without the AA tune. you can definitely feel it, especially at lower rpms. You just don't get as much power as with the tune, and the powerband is a little wonky around 3500rpm or so. The AA tune gives you more power, and smooths out the dip.

I've read that there are 8 ponies to be found from just putting the 3IM without the tune, but I wouldn't get too excited over that. I personally did not feel anything except the car felt like it had vtec when you passed 4500rpm. Maybe I just forgot what the car felt like without the 3IM since I've been driving with it for the past 2 years. Like you said the powerband is wonky now and am waiting on my AA tune

BMS powerbox works fine with stage 3 manifold, but IMO i think AA tune works better and provides more!

The DISA motors will not do anything on stock software, or with a powerbox throttle remap. You need a dedicated flash tune (like the Active Autowerke) to derive the full benefits. There is a lot of misinformation in this thread.

I have a dyno of my car picking up about 14hp in the midrange with just the manifold. It was less at peak, and more torque down low, like around 2500rpm. but there is a big dip at 3500-4200 rpm that you can feel when you are accelerating.

I don't take that as misinformation, since I actually got my car dynoed 3 times. once with PBX, once with PBX+ 3stage IM, and once with 3stage IM+ AA tune. Like I said, you do get some benefit with just the manifold, but not as much as with the AA tune.

of course everyone's car is going to be different, but I am not talking out of my ass.
