Has anyone use M1 5w30 in your 335i? If the BMW 5w30 works for the car, why cant M1 5w30 be compatible as well? I had used 5w30 on my 2000 328ci before and no issue.

Nobody knows because most stick with an oil which has LL01 rating (M1 0w-40 for example) in order preserve their warranty after that some use whatever they want.

Because there is a lot more to oil than viscosity. I wouldn't recommend using the Mobile 1 5W-30, as it is not LL01 rated. The LL01 rating on the oil is mandatory for BMW's gasoline powered US engines.

The 30 weight rating is a range is viscocities @ 100c. From what I understand, BMW branded 5w-30 is at the thick end of the 30 weight range, close to a 40 weight. Mobil 5w-30 is thinner on the 30 weight range and not thick enough for BMW's spec. Just use the proper 0w-40 Mobil to be safe. It's the same price as any other grade.

yes of course you can use another 5w30 oil and it doesnt have to actually be LL01.

BUT and i repeat BUT

unless you know what exactly is in the oil and what LL01 requires (or your car requires) then just dont do it.

5w30 is too thin. Don't do it. SAE ratings have numerical ranges, just because BMW's 5W30 oil is the right one doesn't mean that another vendor's 5W30 is the right one as well.

For M1, use 0w40 as others have said.

Really, many have used as high as 10w-60 in high temp climates with out issue. What would be the problem with using a lower weight in a very cold climate. In the owners manual of my 911 it has a sliding scale of what weight you should use based on temperature.

All BMWs had the sliding scale before the LL-98/LL-01/LL-04 specs. came out. My E36 owner's manual says 5w-20, 5w-30, 10w-30, 10w-40, 15w-40, 15w-50 and 20w-50, plus other *special oils* are all approved, depending on the outside average temperature.

I've heard (on BobIsTheOilGuy.com) that 15w-40 (non-synthetic) is a very good choice for many German cars in warmer climates. The UOAs show excellent results, even in modern german cars. Its a very tough oil. Also, I think Porsche suggested 15w-40 for most of its cars up until not very long ago. Curious if yours suggests that? What year is yours?

I wrote this on bimmerforums a while ago....

"The Mobil 1 and Castrol 5w-30 are technically the wrong oils, but I highly doubt there ever would be an issue, especially at the speeds US freeways run at. I think people get a little too wrapped up in using only BMW LL-01 oils. The BMW LL-01 specification is simply just an all-purpose, all-season, fuel economy minded, long-oil drain standard that BMW has come up with. It's there to make everything simple, not be a magical oil. It meets a value that makes it thick and robust enough for high-speed/high-temp driving (HTHS ≥3.5), but not too thick that it will hinder fuel economy too much. It's a synthetic which will help it meet the long oil drain intervals that BMW desires. And, it meets the specs of a 0w or 5w oil, eliminating the need to change to a different oil seasonally.

That all makes it a geat choice for what exactly it's made for. Going the full drain interval your computer suggests AND starting your engine when it's -20F AND driving 140mph on the autobahn on a hot summer's day AND getting the fuel economy that BMW says it will achieve. I still think there is some smart discretion that can be used if one or more of these factor do not matter to the user."

That being said, there's really no reason not to use a BMW LL-01 oil for probably 99% of people. Unless you're seriously racing and want something like a 10w-60 or 20w-50. Or, are looking to save money and use a non-synthetic such as 15w-40.

i have been using mobil 1 5w-30 for over 20000 miles in my e90 with no problems. ill be having my oil tested by blackstone to see what they really think of 5w-30

HTHS Viscosity of M1 5w-30 is < 3.13 which is below the min ACEA(A3/B4) specification required for your car. I wouldn't do any frequent prolonged high speed runs in your car. Especially with the shearing your probably getting from fuel dilution.

Just an FYI on oil analysis from Blackstone. Their equipment, like most everyone else, can only detect wear metals within a certain size. Larger pieces will not show up on their results.

Search VISOM and Mobil 1.

In this day in age the additive packages have contribute as much to the performance of an oil as the base stocks. Not to mention that many synthetic's usually are a mixture of different base stocks.

I have been using MB 1 synthetic 5w30 since ive had 60k, now I have 89k and no problems so far at all... I do change it every 3500 mile tho
