Do we know if tracking the car and high engine temperature for prolonged period cause certain N54 parts to fail prematurely, such as the water pump?

I will say that it will put increased stress on an already weak part with its plastic.fins. These are prone to failure mine went at 70k. However if yours does go and you are comfortable working on your car you can replace it with some fairly simple/ basic effort for $450 rather than paying a stealership $1100 like I did.

Thanks for the info. Do you know what part of your water pump failed? Member ENINTY (N52) who got the water pump failure reported that the plastic propellers were fine, and it was the electronics that failed.

Unfortunately I had it replaced at the dealership (who actually gave me the best price compared.to indys) because I needed the car back.for work and didn't want the hassle...

I never got around to ask them. I can say it went from working complete fine on a regular commute to work when I wasn't beating on it for a change to complete limp mode as I was about to merge with traffic after the off ramp. The car only had 72k. I've never had a water pump fail that early.....

I was at the track Friday in Dallas. High 62. Perfect track weather. No cooling issues...highest oil temp was 250. Stett OC rocks. But I did get a limp mode after some particularly hard driving. Took her to the paddock for a rest. It was gone on restart. I ran the rest of day w/o issue. I do have a BT tool, but have yet to check codes.

What do you have in your radiator? When you're getting faster just the OCs aren't enough...even in cool weather.

Of course the limp ,ode could be any # of reasons. I've had them for a bad fuel pump.

Im runniing stock coolant with 1 bottle of mocool. I did not log water temps, but I really think it was not heat related.

For all of you AT guys, I found this transmission cooler:

You really need to watch this. I and a lot of others speak from experience. Distilled water and mocool. Mocool with stock coolant doesn't really do anything. Mid 60s ambient also doesn't really matter when you're driving the car hard.

With that said, if you only saw 250 oil temps you might be right. But you should still watch water temps.

vasillalov, placement is the issue. where does this go? I had a thread about an AT cooler. A wide and shallow unit on top of the intercooler is a great option. Any core would suffice. The stock AT cooler is ridiculous. It's tiny and almost inaccessible by cool air.

No idea honestly. I was browsing the ECSTuning web site to see what they have for the E90 335i and I saw this tranny cooler. I have a 6MT car so this was not important to me but I thought other people here might benefit.

Give them a call or send them an email and ask about it.

Also, they have a 9-row and 19-row oil Mishimoto oil cooler kit that I am thinking of rigging up infront of the radiator or the driver side wheel arch.

Here is the 9-row one:

Good point. I will log the water temp next time at the track. I am gaining experience and pushing the car harder, so this may become more of an issue.

I started a thread about using an M3 DCT oil cooler, but no interest. Any of you 335ers consider it? Aluminum core radiator, stock oil cooler with modified thermostat in the right side and M3 dct oil cooler in the left intake.

link?

We have the OC situation under control as 2-3 aftermarket options have been performing well on the track but we're always up for new options and new radiator offerings. Distilled water and Mocool or Water Wetter in the stock radiator help a lot but are still not enough in 90F+ ambient and advanced rungroups.

Great post, a lot of resources for those of us that are tracking our cars. I've never had overheating issues (fingers crossed), but I have experience limp modes. I see that many people in this post attribute limp modes to overheating, but it is not the only reason. I haven't seen a comment in regards to spark plugs, but I thought it would be important to mention to the newer guys. If you have a tune in your car, you take it to the track and drive it hard, your spark plugs will go quicker, cause cylinder misfires, therefore, limp modes.

If you look at the track results chart on the 1st page, my last line says cylinder 5/6 misfires - not oil/water-related limp mode

No worries, this has become a monster thread, info overload!

Just to follow up- I pulled my codes after hitting reduced power on the track. Is 30FC, which is related to the wastegates. It could be that I have a tear in a vacuum line somewhere, or my wategates need replaced. Either way, unrelated to cooling.

This car is a major pain in the butt to track. It's damned near impossible to get through a track day without having some kind of code for some part failing. It's either that or high oil temps keep you from pushing the car, and getting better as a driver.

You definitely have to hit the sweet spot with cooling mods and your fuel system and turbos not failing. When you do it's great but arggghhhh!!

I just had to use the 335 last weekend at Infineon cause the M3 broke. It wasn't my preference (how's that all you AT haters?) but I though why not. It was great and was running 1:57s on NT05s. Very happy with that but in the 4th session it just gave up and not due to temps.

Once you're to the point where the 335 is limiting your driving time and you have the right cooling mods it's a sure sign you need to move into another, more track worthy car. That is the truth!
