235 width on 9" wheel

I'm participating in the group buy for the 18" Apex ARC-8s. Originally I was going to go with the same stagger I had on my previous 19s, 9.5 in the rear, 8.5 in the front. So I ordered 265/35 and 235/40 tires to go with them, when Costco had Michelins on sale last week.

All was well, until I decided I wanted matching concavity in the front, and switched just the fronts to the 18x9 et30. Now my question is, will the 235 tire look weird on the wider rim? It doesn't have to bulge noticeably, but I don't want even the slightest hint of stretch. Trying to figure out if I should go through the hassle of getting Costco to swap out the fronts for 245/40 before I pick them up.

235 on a 9" definitely shows some stretch, even a 245 and 255 to some extent. 265 is the smallest tire that starts to look square on a 9".

For reference here is a very old picture of mine. 255 on a 9", a slight hint of stretch IMO.

And finally, a 255 on a 8.5". This is more or less equivalent to a 265 on a 9" (wheel is 12.7mm wider, tire is 10mm wider) in terms of fit. Very square sidewall.

really depends on the brand of tire. I believe Michelin runs a little wider than normal. 235mm tread tires theoretically shouldn't be a stretch on 9" wide wheel, seeing as 235/25.4=9.25 inches. Check out the site, it will help to visualize.

235 won't be stretched but to get a square look like above you need to be oversized, as wheel widths are measured from inside of the lip to inside of the lip, where obviously you see the outside of the lip.

The match doesn't work like that. 235 is for 8" 245 for 8.5" 255" for 9" if you want somewhat square look.

What? Seriously? 235 won't be stretched on 9" ? 255 is stretched! What makes you think that 235 will not? Harambe even posted photos !!!

Again, you are generalizing tire tread widths. Not all tire manufacturers stick to the correct specified tread numbers. Even your math is somewhat incorrect as the jump in 1/2" does not equal 10mm. The values are wrong, but again, generalization is being used.

Also, your definition of a non-stretched tire is that of an oversized tire.

Non stretched, squared and oversized. There are no other definitions.
OP request is "It doesn't have too bulge noticeably, but I don't want even the slightest hint of stretch".
I will translate for you:
bulge > oversized
stretched > tire to small/too narrow
Meaning he wants the tire to be square. Is simple.
I know 0.5" is not 10mm, is 12.7mm but let me ask you, when was the last time you measured 9" rim?
Please do, and post some photos with measurements here for us.

OP said he doesn't want the "slightest hint of stretch" to me this means he wants a tire that fits perfectly square. A 265 is square on a 9". End of story.

Edit: though I should mention fitting a 265 in front is tricky. 255 is doable, 245 won't have any issues.

Yeah even fitting a 265 PSS in the rear is tricky, had to go to the minimum camber spec to avoid rubbing over bumps. That was on a 19x9.5 et35, which didn't look stretched to me, but technically I guess was just a little bit. So perhaps I spoke a little too strongly initially, probably from exposure to the real horrific stretches--had somebody on another forum I moderate asking about putting 225/35/18 on 18x10.5" the other day

FWIW, this is a little lower profile than I was looking at:

But doesn't look too bad, especially considering the wide shoulder on the PSS. I'm debating between trying to swap the front to a 245/40 if I can, keeping the order as-is if I can't, or switching to a square 255/35 on 18x9" at all 4 corners. I hate to give up the wider rear though, as it's hard enough to put all that torque on the ground already

225 on a 10.5 isn't that bad to be honest.

Need to stop being girls about stretch, as long as the bead is seated against the rim and higher pressures are used it'll be fine.

Anyway, as said a wheels width is measured from inside the rim, so add roughly an inch to get the outside width, then convert that to MM and depending on brand add 10 to get a square-ish look.

I'm not a stupid stance bro idiot and I like wide tires for handling.

I run Arc 8's with 235/40/18 front on a 9" wheel and its stretched a LITTLE bit and the rim pokes but it fits.

My setup sounds very similar:
Front: 18x9 et30 | Rear 18x9.5 et35
Front: 235/40/18 | Rear: 265/35/18

it works but I have to run a 5mm spacer in the front and I'd rather run 255 in front but perch on lowering spring wont allow it

I have a pair of 245/40's for sale, theyre REALLY tall for the front but match the overall diameter increase almost exactly with the rear. Going from 235/40/18 to 245/40/18 is a 3.5mm diameter increase and going from 255/35/18 to 265/35/18 is a 4mm diameter increase. This will also 'correct' your speedo a little bit but nothing to write home about.

I didnt like the 245's in front, like I said, theyre REALLY tall but not my car.

Try this site, it helps you get a visual but is pretty far from accurate www . will they fit . com

Good luck and dont forget to share pics

Went by Costco this afternoon, and the only way to make a change is to return the whole lot and re-order, which would mean losing the $130 discount. So that brings my options down to stick with the 9" wheel for the concavity and deal with whatever stretch that entails (hoping it'll be minimal due to PSS running wide), or step back down to 8.5" where I know the PSS will look square (because it did on my previous 19s) and forfeit the concavity.

I'm in the same group buy for a new square setup: 9" ET30 Arc-8 R18. I really wanted to get the new Pilot Sport 4s and they are only available in 245/40R18 and Apex CS themselves said that would be too tall of a setup. Harambe had a similar setup and said it was fine. Looking at the wheel calculator with that setup doesn't see that far off. Anyone else try this setup and seem to have issue? I really want to try out the new PS4s' but I'd hate to have rubbing issues. Mod details in my garage link.

Edit: 245/40/R18 were too tall, rubbed like crazy for me in the front. It worked for Harambe because he didn't have as aggressive as a front rim offset and width.

Found some pics last night of 245 PSS looking fairly meaty on 9" ARC-8s, and 255 likewise on 9.5" ARC-8s. So I'm sticking with the 9" and hoping for the best. I'll post pics in a few weeks once they get mounted.

Edit: Also found 235/40/18 PSS on an 18x9 et31 EC-7. I think I can live with this:

Not perfectly square, but close enough.

As you said, I had no issues running 245/40/18 square.

You will be able to live with it. I was in the same situation as I upgraded to the 9" front, but kept the 235 because it had a lot of tread life left. It is slightly stretched, but it looks fine and there is still some rim protection.

I will upgrade to 255 when I need new tires, but if I was you I wouldn't worry about it. The tire size is fine and the concavity of the rim is great so it will look awesome.

PSS are known to run wide so I don't have trouble believing that. Especially given the pic of 235s on a 9" wheel he posted up above, that's essentially perfect fitment as far as maximizing use of tire width goes.
