Need brake pad and rotor recommendations for 335
Hey guys so I'm looking for new pads and rotors for my 335. It's a 2007 coupe and my front pads are about done but I may replace the rotors as well. I am already tuned with some other bolt ons but plan on doing more so I'd like to get some good brakes for it.
I ran BMW performance rotors with Performance Friction Carbon Metallic pads from bimmerworld on my ZHP and liked them a lot. However, that was a few years ago. Can you all recommend some good brake pad/rotor combinations for my front axle? Not interested in BBK or super expensive stuff. I've heard good things about cool carbon pads and turner recommends Metal Master low dust pads... I'd like low dust, no squealing and good initial bite (for aftermarket pads). I do a good bit of back road driving and may be doing some autocross as well. Thanks! Last edited by Hokie_BMW; 09-30-2013 at 06:37 PM.. |

After years of being on e90post, there are not many pads that offer good bite.
friends with cool carb/stoptechs/ i have HPS/ and some more all said they lost the initial bite. so stick with OEM if you want that bite and live with the dust. HPS provide good stopping power but just not enough bite. low dust.

Thanks. I meant more like relatively good bite for aftermarket pads, not compared to stock haha. I'm leaning towards maybe the cool carbon or metal masters or stick with the performance friction zaps I had before.
Any recommendations for rotors? Would like to get slotted for looks but are still strong enough I don't have to worry about cracking |

Personally I'd stick to stock when it comes to the rotors. Blanks are the way to go; they'll last the longest and provide the least headaches (no noise, &c). Slotted will go through pads faster and drilled are a thing of the past, I always wonder why they're still popular (probably because they 'look cool').

Slotted is used in racing applications to improve cooling. Slotted replaced drilled there a long time ago; Google the history of drilling rotors and their original purpose, and you'll understand why drilled is obsolete today.
That said, slotted for street isn't rational IMO; you can use them but they're not as quiet, eat pads faster and are more expensive. OEM blanks are dependable, work well in all applications and are economical. Frequent track goers including myself use blanks for all of those reasons, and the fact that they last a long time. Unless you're concerned with appearance, in which case our brakes look crappy anyway, blanks are the practical route.

Alright, thanks for the info! Guess I'll go with blanks then. Leaning towards the same performance friction metallic ceramic pads that I had on my last car since I know them and they work well even when they get hot. I'll measure my rotors when I get a chance and see if they NEED to be replaced or not. My car is just about to turn 40k miles so we'll see.
I'll update when I finalize my order |

What are the "go-to" pads for sport street driving and occasional auto-x? I was reading about cool carbon pads but the reviews have been iffy when used on the track. Any suggestions?
I'd like low dust and no noise. |

Ceramic pads are a good choice they are quiet and compared to the stock pads they are almost dust free.

My wheels are nice and clean with HPS pads. That initial bite from oem pads doesn't necessary mean better stopping power. I will gladly give up that bite for clean wheels.

I got the kit I liked to above. Got drilled and slotted rotors, ceramic pads, and wear sensors for a little over $300. It was a great deal I was skeptical at first because of the price, but they were even cheaper than stock brakes so I had to give them a try. I'm very happy with them they work much better than the stock brakes and I don't have to clean my wheels very often anymore.

I just did a lot of research and a lot of people recommended the akebono euros. You can get them under 100 from advance auto parts if you use coupon codes by far the cheapest place I found them. I plan on installing them in the next week or so. I just got tired of the dust of the oe pads.

Okay one other question. I have gotten a couple quotes from vendors on here for full brake kits ranging from $550ish to $660ish.
Can anyone comment on the differences between R1 rotors and StopTech rotors? Both seem to be reputable. |

Ok I ended up going with the R1 rotors and Stoptech pads. Worked with Kevin at R1 a lot and he was extremely helpful! I ended up ordering over the phone with Charlie who was also very helpful.
Also ordered some ATE type 200 to do a brake fluid flush. Excited to get this stuff on and compare to stock and previous brake setups I've used in the past. |
