Agreed. I've had a manual as a daily driver in Atlanta. Rush hour traffic svcked. Not just slower/faster traffic which you can manage in a MT but complete stops. Go Stop Go Stop Go Stop...

A 6MT BMW would be fun as a weekender, or if I didn't regularly sit in stop-and-go traffic, but not for my daily driver needs. Maybe I'm just getting old. *shrug*

To answer the original question; I consciously chose the 6AT having many years experience with both manual and auto transmissions. It fit my needs and I've never had a second thought about my choice.

I absolutely regret getting the at. I despise the automatic transmission, its one of the least smooth trannys I've ever experienced in a car, real let down considering its a ZF...

AGREEED. 10000%. This would definitely make the world a safer place in terms of driving.

Disagree 100000000000000%. Study after study has shown that having to do more things whilst driving diminishes safety. I love driving manual as much as anyone else, but I refuse to ignore reality.

i don't regret having a 6at, at times I would love to have a manual transmission but those times are rare compared to the time I am stuck in traffic. I think having a DCT would be the best of both worlds so when I buy my next car I will likely go in that direction.

I've never understood this way of thinking. Yes, driving does s*** merging 12 lanes into 3, bumper to bumper going to work. but traffic s****, it has nothing whatsoever to do with the transmission of the car. Is it somehow less su**** to have to constantly move your foot from the gas to the brake?

Either you like to shift yourself, or you don't. It's black, and white. None of this, I would drive a manual, except....my .02.

Nope, not exactly.

It all depends on where you will spend your time in that particular vehicle.

MT for my track car, AT for my street car. Best of both worlds. Liking one doesn't mean hating the other. They each have their place. Choices in life are not always this OR that. Sometimes it can be this AND that.

Totally disagree. That isn't the "best of both worlds." It's like saying, straight on weekends, *** on weeknights. Best of both worlds. You don't switch hit on the tranny (figuratively speaking).

I have to agree with you both. The most common reason I hear from people about why an AT is better is because they "don't have to think about it in traffic".
Come on now the last thing I want is the people around me not thinking about driving!

Reminds me of the time I got pulled over for lane spiltting. I told the cop "if everyone rode a motorcycle we wouldn't have this traffic". He replied, "if everyone had to ride a motorcycle, half the people would be dead!" And I said, "probably but we wouldn't have this traffic. "

I don't disagree that studies have found that do more things whilst driving diminishes safety. BUT I believe all those studies are talking about "more things to do" in terms of phone calls, texting, tuning the radio, eating, reading, etc. I highly doubt any of them are talking about the actual functions of driving. If so, maybe we need to get rid of turn signals, lights, wipers, etc.

Seriously though, do you ever notice how many people are making hand held phone calls, texting, spending excessive time tuning the radio, eating (full meals), reading (books / magazines), shaving, doing their makeup, etc while driving??? It's just crazy! And most of them are driving automatics.

I love my auto now that I have the alpina flash. You can really bang through the gears and there is no way a person could shift that fast. It really is an animal now.

Driving a stick does not preclude me from fiddling with the gadgets or enjoying a morning coffee while driving. However, some people in California came up with a clever idea to discourage their teenagers texting while driving http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2012/01/24/calif-parents-clever-way-to-fight-against-texting-and-driving-get-a-stick-shift/
My car is not a commuter car, and I drive in one if the most congested places in the North East - NYC, and having a stick does not bother me in stop and go traffic, you have to work your feet regardless if it is a manual or automatic or DCT equipped car.

I agree stop n go sucks but overall I just like MT much better its just better overall driving experience. My E46 328i was auto and I did love that car but it just aint the same.
