Poor man's short shifter (oem)
So I had no idea that 1-series shifter knobs are direct fit for the e90. I installed one today (cost was 30 bucks for a used one) and instant simulated STS. Pic shows comparison...

How does it shift and feel?
Any clearance issues or? I like the look of oem knob. May consider

Shifting feels awesome!!! No clearance issues that I can see... I already put on 190km in Toronto traffic (lots of shifting) with it on.

You can do the same trick in leather (if you like that feel better) with the e46 zhp knob, like this one I had once:
