Navigation update also updates software?

I'm wondering does buying the BMW navigation update also update the software itself? I helped a buddy today test drive a 2009 335i coupe. The navigation software on there is different than my 2007 335i sedan. Not entirely sure if I like the newer user interface or not. Either way, if I buy the updated maps will it update my navigation software?

09 is LCI....

I believe the iDrive interface was one of the many things changed...

Ok then I'm "safe" from the update. What is LCI?

Life Cycle Impulse or "mid-cycle refresh" as the rest of the world refers to it. Among 1000 other changes, one was a switch from the CCC based iDrive to CIC.

On the older CCC systems the new maps update the software. My nav/audio/bluetooth was acting weird( wouldn't recognize the iPhone input, wouldn't do traffic updates wouldn't recognize the SOS phone) but restarts fixed it every time. Updated the maps, got the "loading new software, please wait 5 minutes" message and it's been rock solid ever since.

the annual map updates for the CCC Nav system contains map data(POI, etc) only. In order to update the iDrive software and other systems the dealer or an Indy with access, will perform a software update loading the latest software based on your VIN

Thanks. How many hours of labor can I expect to be charged for that?

It really depends on the dealer and how many modules in your car require updates (usually it's quite a few). The entire process can take up to 8 hours. Of course a tech doesn't have to sit there watching the entire time, but even so your car is still taking up a service bay for that amount of time, so it's not exactly near-zero time either. A dealer should be able to give you a quote, but I've seen people post here saying they got theirs updated for $250-300.

do u know how significant is the difference in terms of functionalities? I have 08 e92, and I tried to put my VIN on the bmw website, and it says my software is already up to date, but I notice that the new iDrive interface looks way different than I currently have. Is there like a limitation on what software update I can have ? TIA

I highly doubt you'd see a new interface. Maybe just optimizing current functions and make them quicker, but from my understanding you wouldn't get the newer interface as it uses a different system.

Hope I'm wrong, because the pre lci idrive menus are worse aesthetically than a snes menu.

I would be more than happy to help you update your NAV but I have the CIC version (2011 E92) and I believed you have the CCC version. I have attached a link to two posts for updating the CCC and CIC navigation system. It is a lot more economical (around $60 for CIC) to do it thru the links than going to the stealership

You would not get the new iDrive interface (CIC 2009+) just by updating the software. You would have to retrofit a whole new CIC system in your car in order to get the newer interface.

triger716 is correct - pre-2009 is the CCC system, 2009+ is the CIC system. They are different hardware and you won't go from a 2008 CCC to a CIC without physically replacing the CCC system with a CIC system.

Unfortunately some people repeating incorrect information about software updates, thereby causing confusion.

BMW's software update website provides updates only for the Bluetooth / USB device support. It is only for vehicles built after March 2010; essentially those with a Combox.
