how does hill descent control work in vehicles with manuals
Looking at E90's it looks like all of the vehicles with xdrive have hill descent control. How does this work with a manual transmission?

I don't think he's referring to the hill holder. This is the descent control button and as I have a manual X-drive I was wondering the same thing.

I have one in my 335xi. I'll push it the next time I drive down the hill towards work and let you know what happens. If I blow my transfer case I'm going to hate PM you.

I don't have any button but when I'm on a hill at a red light and release my brakes. They hold on for a moment til I start moving so I don't roll back.

I have it on my e91 328xi, and I have a manual transmission. If you are going to go down a slippery hill, like snow covered or muddy, press the button and don't touch the throttle/brakes. The car will automatically manage your descent at walking speed. I think you can actually control the descent speed with the cruise stalk. It's in the manual.
It works. I had it in my last car too. I've probably used it about 3-4 times in four years, so not really necessary, at least where I drive. |

Worked great in both my e90's with manual. Have a very, very steep hill and in the snow it allows the slow speed and since the brakes aren't being used you can steer the car. Love the feature.

This is a very nice option for me. You have to go down a fairly steep hill with a turn in the middle of it to get out of our neighborhood. In my Jeep I can just put it in 1st or low range 2nd or 3rd and it will creep down really slow. In my wife's Flex we go down it sideways all the time. The hill is steep enough that anti-locks can't seem to beat it. |

I was heading down a hill in 5th gear at 50mph and pressed the button. It didn't light up and nothing changed with the drive experience.

It keeps the car speed under 9mph if you go faster it disengages and uses engine braking to bring it back under 9 mph. As you can see it will be most useful in 1st and 2nd gear only.
