Thumbs down ANOTHER exploding sunroof...

2007 BMW 328i

Well, I'm driving along on the highway, no other cars around, windows up, sunroof closed, AC on. Then, I heard what sounded like a shotgun go off. I could then hear air at the sunroof. Slid back the visor, and sure enough, the sunroof glass had exploded out of the car.

Took it into BMW the next day, dude says..."a rock hit it, call your insurance"...without even looking at the car. Eventually, he comes out to look at the car, along with their "specialist". He talks some bullsh!t, then tells me the they can't do anything for me. During the whole process, I'm being spoken to as if I'm an idiot.

I leave, then immediatly contact BMW North America. The guy I talk to there says he'll see what he can do. A few days later, the dealership calls me back and asks what my insurance said. I told him I didn't call my insurance, and that BMW NA told me to wait until I heard back from them. He then sighed and says, okay...we will cover it under "good will" but not under warranty.

I don't care, I just want it fixed. I drop it off, and to make matters worse they give me a Scion as a loaner.

Now, I go back to pick the car up a few days later (Friday). They pull the car up, and when I look inside, there is grease/grime all over the running boards, carpet and driver's side armrest (near the door handle). The lady working at the time cleans it all up, and did a good job...but underneath all the grime, the armrest is all scratched up. She informs me that my service guy is gone (it was 6:30) and that she'll leave a note for him about the problem, and I should hear from him on Monday.

Thursday rolls around and I still havent heard sh!t. So, I call the dealership, and of course, my service guy is "busy". I leave a message explaining the situation and ask for him to call me. Of course...he never calls me back.

Now, at this point I'm over the whole ordeal and now my wife and I are going out this weekend to shop for a new car, and trade in this damn BMW. I'm aware we're going to lose our asses on the trade in, but at least I won't have to deal with this crap again.

Sorry for the rant, just had to get it off my chest. I left out a LOT of details, but I would've ended up writing a dang novel. I searched the boards and saw that this happened to a few other guys. It can't just be a coincidence.

Thanks for listening.

Sorry to hear your troubles.

I would try another dealership first.

Jeez, that's the third (fourth?) exploding sunroof story now. I never heard of that happening to anyone's sunroof until I started reading e90post. Freaky. Good luck getting the armrest resolved.

First it's fuel pumps, now sunroof's damn.... That sucks man, Dont give up the bimmer, just give up the dealer. Let BMWNA know they suck and take your business elsewhere.... There are good dealerships out there.

Trading in a car because of a dealership that treats their customers like ass? That's just silly.

Seriously, I'm curious to know the cause of this unexplained mystery.

Someone had dropped a rock on my windshield when I was travelling at least 65 mph. Had to have the front windshield replaced, but it didn't shatter of course, because it's safety glass. Maybe the sunroof should be made of the same material.

Try another dealership. It's not the problem with the car that's bad, it's how it was handled.

I know it may sound silly, but I really don't want to have to deal with that dealership for the next 4 years. The whole thing has just become a headache, and the next closest dealership is almost an hour away. If our search tomorrow doesn't go well, I may try giving the other dealer a shot. It just sucks bacause you expect to be treated a certain way by BMW.

With that being said, the guys at BMW North America were very helpful, and pleasant to deal with.

After the whole thing happened, my co-worker told me that the same thing happened to his friend about 6 months ago. He said they resolved that case by giving him a "great deal" on a 335.

Here's a shot of the sunroof. It looks as though it exploded "outwards". As if it was some sort of cabin pressure issue. Who knows.

I'll soon be doing ED on a 328 Sport Wagon, which has that "panoramic" sunroof. This sure has me worried about what to expect. Can you imagine having this happen while driving in a heavy rain?
On the other hand, this isn't exactly an epidemic, considering the number of cars out there.

Trade 'em all in, makes my car more unique

All kidding aside, I think an experience with a dealership really should not change your opinion on a car brand.

if i was the guy at the dealership and you told me that your sunroof glass had broken i would probably have told you to call your insurance. i mean, give the guy a break, can't say the first thing i would think of is that the sunroof has a faulty exploding window.

This is the 4th one now on e90post, and we only represent a small percentage of the e90 population. I wonder how many this has happened to so far.

I feel for you. Yep, "trying another dealer" isn't always a reasonable option. My next closest dealer is 5 hours away.

It will blow out. At 65mph, the outward pressure is about 10 pounds per square foot. My bimmer hasn't been redelivered yet, so I don't know the sunroof dimensions. But say it's 3' by 2', that gives 60 pounds of force on it. Not much, so either the glass is defective, or maybe it was mounted incorrectly such that it was under a lot of stress.

wow, broken glass is in the exact same shape as this other one... rounded on one side, and 2 pointed edges on the other side of the hole...

Looks like its just on e90's so far... no coupes yet... I counted 5 shattered sunroof threads when I did a search

Trading the car in now because of the dealer doesn't seem the best idea, but if you don't like dealing with them and you can take the hit then why not?

As a last chance when you go to pick up the car why don'y you try and make an appointment with the general manager of the dealership, if you have time maybe find all the exploding sunroof threads and just print off the first page of each. When you speak to him show him the other instances of exploding sunroofs and explain you think their standard of service was way below par and take it from there, if an apology is forthcoming with a recompense that is suitable then no need to trade in the car, if they are still treating you like an ass then walk away and name and shame them.

STOP giving 5 to the survey

I have witness and hear so much bad service from BMW and we need to do something about this.
Lets remember that we paid a premium price for these cars and no way should be treated like this

So, what would the outward pressure be at 135mph? Not trying to jinx myself, but just saying I have set the cruise at that speed on the autobahn. I think one of the people in another thread had mentioned something about manufacturing defects that occur in the glass that can cause this type of occurance, and that it even happens in buildings at times.

Unfortunately the world or automotive service often works as follows: if we don't think we are resposible for your cars repairs, we will not give you good service when performing them. And yes that sucks. Very much. But that's just human nature, and unfortunately even people who are supposed to be professional and swallow their pride are nevertheless human.

Best advice I can give is to:

a) Find a different dealership
b) If that fails, call insurance

But what I don't recommend is switching cars/brands. Why? Because the experience you had was not representative of the make of car you drive and has equal liklihood in being repeated by dealerships for _any_ brand of vehicle. If fact you may find that your next experience is even worse. You simply will not find a brand of vehicle whose every dealership is run with the integrity of a nunnery. In fact, on average, you'll probably find more bad service than good, whereever you go.
