328i auto tranny shifts

This is my first steptronic car, closest thing I've driven is an auto civic. Maybe I'm being picky but does this seem normal to you guys?

My car just feels bad when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd, especially under load like on a hill. It's hard to explain, but say im going up on a hill, in 2nd gear. the engine is revving at 3000rpm. when I shift the rpm actually goes up to 3300-3500rpm, the car kinda decelerates almost as if I put the brakes on and then it shifts to third.

This behavior sort of comes and goes, i told the dealership about it and the technician went on saying it's a gm transmission and I'm being paranioid and picky and expecting too much. But this just doesn't feel right. Tell me I'm paranoid!

One more thing I've noticed is the lag when I downshift, feels like a full second before the gears engage... Is everyone elses car like this?

I've not experienced the 2nd to 3rd shift problem in my car. It doesn't seem normal. The lag when downshifting is normal.

You should try to take your car to a different dealer. Get a loaner and see if it does it on a loaner as well or go test drive a new car. Are you the 1st owner?

I have not noticed that either but then I never downshift at 3000rpm climbing a hill. In DS mode, at times the shift from 3rd to 4th can be a little too eager by the ECU. I wish it can hold the 3rd gear longer especially in spirited driving.

OP - Some have complained about unsmooth shifts in the 328 AT. This is why I just ordered 6MT : ) Sorry to hear about your experience. In my current 2008 328, the shifts are very clunky. At times, it feels like my car is getting a swift kick to the ass in 1-2nd and 2-3rd shifts : ( Best I can recommend is a dealer re-program. This helps temporarily but mine always came back

Never had that issue with my car and I used to live on a pretty steep hill. The exact scenario where I start going up hill on 3rd then since the hill is a bit too steep, I had to down shift to 2nd. No slow down or delays at all.

Actually I just read another thread about a similar observation with the 335is DCT tranny, will check out the general forum if I can find it.

Here it is:

I still don't know what the issue is but it seems much better now that I'm used to the car.

I think the problem was before shifting from 2nd to 3rd I would lift my foot slightly off the gas and that was making the shifts strange/unpleasant. I always drive in manual mode now and most of the time shifts are silky smooth.
