Is It Possible To Replace Waste Gate Without Replacing Turbo?

Is it? Mine is bad and is making a grinding noise. BMW says they need to replace the turbos and I'm only 19 and don't have that type of money. Any other small BMW shops can do it? Any tips? Also is it bad to run my car with bad waste gate?

The wastegate is built into the turbo manifold... Unfortunately it cannot be replaced separately

depending on your mileage turbos should be replaced under a BMW NA issued warranty extension. IIRC it is 8 years 80k miles for wastegate rattle/failure.

Didn't you just say in your other thread on the exact same subject that you have 82k miles?

It is possible to replace the actuators.. but it is the same process as replacing the turbos. Still ~1k in labor.

Mr. 5 has a thread on here about replacing just the actuator. Have you tried any adjustments to remedy the rattle already?

No trying to be too condescending here, but you are in way over your head with this car.

Yes, other shops can do it for probably 60-70% of what a dealer will charge, but it is still a large amount of money. If you go the trouble of pulling / replacing the turbos, you should replace the whole unit, not just try to fix the waste gate.

The first thing you should do is find another shop or dealer and get a 2nd opinion and estimate.

You first need to check your vacuum lines or just flat out replace them. If you're 19 you probably have small hands that can reach the rear vacuum line at the rear turbo actuator. Anyway if you look up here and search for the vacuum line replacement you will see all the places the lines go . ($15)
The next test would be the boost solenoids. If you still have rattle then it might be these boost solenoids not functioning as they should. Sometimes they buzz really loudly before they go out. Anyway they are held on by a small nut or two and are really easy to replace . But they are like $85 each.

Then after you do that and if it still rattles you can adjust the wastegate actuator arm by following Mr.5's DIY .

Or if you search the forum for tischer BMW , the turbos are $599 each . But good luck in the labor.

Hi,
Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear some bad news. Like others have suggested, you should get your car checked out at the dealer ASAP. Either go in for oil change and ask for complimentary inspection and test drive. Tell them your concerns or simply make an appointment for possible waste gate warranty. Just make sure to keep calm and be professional. Be forthright and firm. Insist on warranty repair if their diagnosis is indeed waste gate.

Dealership can be scary just because its expensive (or like going to the doctor for your worst fear) but generally if you tell them what you want done, they won't BS too much and will try to help. At least mine does.

You can replace just actuator without replacing turbo.
