Yes. I wish this shifter had the same geometry as the stock one. But even the way it is, it still is usable.

The short lever doesn't have the same lateral bend (left) as the stock one, it is straight in the lateral plane and appears to be to the right compared to the stock location.

I just installed this on my 2007 335i E92.

It feels great when I'm stationary, but when I tried to road-test it I can't shift into 2nd or 4th gear!

My kit came with a shifting arm, so maybe I have to install the replacement shifting arm to get it to work...different geometry? Rats!

Here's an update:

I swapped out the shifting arm and it works great. A bit notchier than I'd like, but far better than stock.

If you order the short shift kit, beware the shifting arm replacement! If there's an option to keep the stocker, that's cheaper and a LOT less work.

The bolts to take off the rear bushing are nearly impossible to reach and worse yet, getting the new shifting arm into position is agonizing.

You'll have to unfasten & bend down a lot more of the heat shield towards the back of the car, then pivot the shifting arm along the driveshaft on the passenger side. Be prepared for this to take hours and a lot of brute force to shove it up into place. #*&!

You'll also have to bend down the tabs on the bearing bolts to get them to snap back into place.

In hindsight, it would have been far easier to drop the driveshaft!

I've driven it with both just the shift lever replaced and with the new shifting arm...the action is better with the shifting arm replacement, but it is a cast-iron b*tch to swap out the shifting arm!

Thanks for this DIY. Just did the "budget ssk", aka just the shift lever and bearing. I actually ordered a new circlip too, but didn't like the design of the new one...more of a pain to get on and off, so I just re-used the old one, as it was perfectly fine.

Couple quick comments on the DIY. There were FIVE hex head screws on my plastic shield that I had to remove to drop it, not four. Also, to bend back the heatshield, it's kind of obvious, but it helps to remove the 10 mm metal retainer "nut" and the 13 mm bolt, both holding up the end of the heat shield. It bends back nicely after those are removed.

One other thing that confuses me about this DIY...it's technically for the true 335 ssk, which INCLUDES the shift arm as well as the lever, correct? Yet the DIY doesn't address the whole arm install part.

Anyone know what the differences are?
Which should I order for an 6/07 build e90 335i?

Thanks for the writeup. I read over it a few times and knocked the lever/circlip swap out in 20 mins. The shift action is faster and the feel is great. Can't beat a $70 solution to a $400 problem.

Couldn't agree more with also replacing the shifting arm. What a pain. However, the feel is a lot better than just replacing the short shifter lever. Since the SSK shifting arm is taller in size where the lever is attached, I could not install it by rotating it around the driveshaft. I actually dropped in from inside the car and worked in. Hope this helps...

I just installed the short shift lever on my 330i with ZHP knob. It seems the boot where it meets the knob rubs on the trim a little when I shift to 6th. Is that normal?

I installed it the "ghetto angle" way according to the pictures in the OP, because when I flipped it around to try the "correct" way, the metal lever actually HITS the trim piece when shifting to 1st, 3rd and 5th gears...so that's obviously not right...

I ordered the short shift kit minus the alcantara boot and shift knob.
The shift lever itself you mentioned to order is for 25 11 0434217. However the parts guy at BMW ordered me this lever: 25 11 0434219 < I looked this one up an appears to be for the 335i sedan.

Does anyone know if it makes a difference?
My part is definitely longer than the stock shifter so that doesn't make sense???
I double checked with the parts guy and he assured me it was for the 335i coupe.

Thanks to the OP for this DIY. Took me about an hour. Next time 15 min for sure.
I put the 330 ssl on a 328. Shifter is now lower than stock and throws are short and notchy.

just did it on my E90 328i LCI

I love it, it made a huge difference, the effort that one has to put into the shifter to switch gears is definitely higher, but its worth it. When hauling ass, the short shifts let you drive without as much jerking when engaing to the next gear.

I didnt have to pull any heat shielding back, just took off the plastic cover.

NOTE: Step 19 was a little bit more difficult since the shifting arm in the LCI is a little different than the one in this DIY. You can't wedge a screwdriver like it was done in the DIY. You have to slip the tip into the angle of the rod or whatever it was and push it away. I was stuck at this part because what i saw in the picture was not was i saw on my car, i was like Sh*t but then I figured it out in like 3 minutes. Took me about an hour.

I have a similar problem in that in 1st, 3rd & 6th, it's wayy up there. in neutral, it looks likes it's in 1st, etc.... Almost the opposite of having the "backwards" problem.

I probably installed the "ghetto" way to the selector lever (at an angle) but I'm not sure if that is it.
