Speed cameras on motorways

From todays Sunday Times; Speed cameras on motorways which were previously used in variable speed areas only when the limit was reduced are being used to prosecute for >70mph speeding. Areas are designated "smart" motorways and the new grey Hadecs3 cameras are mounted on poles or gantries and no white lines are needed on road. Avon and Somerset police are using existing cameras and prosecuted 5,500 drivers since June. So it's parts of M25, M1, M6, M3, M60, M4, M5.

There's more - Highways agency are planning to use Hadecs3 cameras for average speed so big stretches of motorway will be covered. And they are proposing to reduce speeds on M1 and M3 stretches to 60mph during day for air quality reasons.

Just posting above for info, not to start speeding debate.

The M3 speed reduction around J5 to J2 has been dropped last time I read the local news. More likely with the smart motorway it will become a spec zone once the 2 years of works are complete

I was double flashed on the M25 on Sunday the 28th December going anti clockwise between J11 and J10. Not received anything yet.......

Was also double flashed last June driving a hire van anti clockwise on the M25 between J7 and J6 by one of the new double camera's that are mounted to the side of the motorway. Not received anything yet....

I was about to go into a rant about something but as we're not debating speeding I'll keep my thoughts to myself this morning

The M25 cameras flash a lot for no violation. I've been sat on cruise control and they often flash me for doing the indicated speed.

Have to say I do think there are some stretches of motorway in the UK that would benefit from being autobahn style no speed limit. How are Germanys autobahn safety records these days?

Difference is that the stretches of de-restricted autobahn are in very good condition, smooth with no bumps and holes etc. if you tried to do 150mph on a UK motorway you would probably get thrown off by something you didn't have time to see coming and of course shouldn't be there in the first place. No matter how good your car was.

One I'm thinking of is good condition, pretty quiet too. Agree though a lot of motorways plus roads as well are in pretty shoddy condition at the moment and wouldn't be able to sustain anything above what's allowed currently. I'm sure there are other factors too. We should all just buy Helicopters

The Times article specifically mentioned the first cameras activated on Oct 22nd between junctions 5 and 6 of M25, (since then 668 caught speeding.) More installed between junctions 23 and 27. But older gantry mounted cameras will be replaced in future.

Think UKIP are gaining a lot of followers. BNP are a bit too extreme

I'd say incompetence of and lack of lane-discipline by majority of drivers are more of an issue for high speeds than condition of road surfaces.

And away from politics, this story has just been picked up by MSN, reporting an Independent newspaper article, so may get more people's attention;

so if reducing speed is about pollution will electric cars be de-restricted? Should pertol cars be allowed higher speeds than diesels and LPGs higher than petrol. What a load of nonsense. Any excuse to make money from motorists.

Have to agree people's lane discipline sucks. Yesterday I meet a car doing 50mph in the fast lane and failing to move over. Dumb ass.

De-restrict the motorways and dual carriage ways and people will learn what a safe speed is.
