regarding rubbing... I have the tinyest rub with my 245 35 19 up front. Offset and circumfrence are different than what you're shopping for. I would just copy what guys like S4to335 are doing.

Here's some really cool info on offsets.

255-40-17, no rub except when I'm locked ----- in the pits. No rub on track.

I wouldn't do 19s on track. Go...not show.

what is an affordable "learning" tire? I think I read that an R compound isn't ideal for a beginner.

No, coilovers and plates.

For a good learning tire, I would suggest the Falken Azenis 615. Cheap, pretty fast, but communicates quite nicely.

You wanna hear when the tire is about to let loose and you want it to let loose progressively - which you won't get on an R-comp.

Needy, needy, needy!

Provided the wheel offset positions the tire in the right place you'll be fine. Sounds like other dudes are running 255 in the front with no rub. The rub would happen from tire to plastic in the wheel well. Not rim to wheel well.

I wouldn't do it unless you have camber plates. With my 17x8.5, I have a mere 6mm to the strut tube on the inside. If you get a lower ET, which you'll have to do with 17x9, you better get some negative camber in there or you'll probably rub on the lip.
