Need opinions... Keep or sell
So I have a decision to make. Keep or sell my wife's 330i. A little background first. We've had the car since 20k miles, has 89k now. Until recently, it's been a great car to own and drive. The only major issues were a head replacement under warranty for the valve tap and a failed water pump last summer. Other than that, I've kept up with all the maintenance and dine the work myself. I really do love the car. So my wife and I separated about 6 months ago and she took the BMW. I finally got to drive it again today and imagine my surprise when I find that During that time span she's managed to hit a parking lot pole and significantly dent the rear passenger door, gouge front and rear bumpers, apparently hit a pothole and destroy a brand new tire, curbed the same wheel and even newer tire to the point of bending rim and taking a large chunk out of said tire, blew at least two speakers, plus the OCI is about 8k overdue, the adaptive headlight malfunction light is on and it looks like a homeless man has been living in it for the duration of our separation. WTF. She's been asking lately if ill help her get a new/newer 335i and after seeing this mess I would never put her in another luxury sedan, much less a BMW. She needs a damn F150. So my options are sell as is for about 10-11k and put toward a new vehicle, address all the issues and sell for about 15-16k or do the same and hand it back to her so she can wreck shop. What would you do? Thanks in advance fellas (and ladies)

1) why would you care if you are separated and if she's such a mess?? She needs to take some responsibility.
2) you will not be able to get 10k for a totally banged up 2006. If you decide to help her, get her a civic and let her learn how to maintain and treat a car, easy way. GL |

If you don't mind sharing, is there a reason you feel obligated to help her? Sounds like she needs a beater car, and definitely not another E90, especially a 335. She should sell the car as is, take the hit and buy a cheap E46 or a "new-ish" Honda IMHO.

You guys are right it's a long story but after 12 years of marriage I can't just leave her out to dry. My goal is to leave her with a reliable vehicle (or at least one with a warranty) so I don't have to worry about her getting stranded somewhere with our daughter. I love the crown Vic idea, could put a bull bar on the front and let her level whatever parking structures or other dc traffic obstacles get in the way.

Sadly she has proven that she is not capable of looking after a vehicle - so without question I would not put her into another BMW..or any other lux car. Pick her up an Accord or a Camry (safe, reliable) and you won't have to worry about her being stranded.

Damn, sorry to hear this. Kudos for doing the right thing tho. Do an oil service to the 330 and let her kill it off. Or sell and get her a used under warranty Accord or Civic.
Good luck.

I would say just clean up the 330 and let her drive it into the ground. Any new car would be a poor investment and at least the car is safe for her and your daughter, which is the key concern other than the prestige of a bimmer. I am sure she will need to lean on you for maintenance costs but that would be the same for any car from the sounds of things. If divorce in eminent, you don't want to owe on another car in addition to a settlement. I hope things work out for you, seems like regardless of the issues between you, you still have room to care for her.

Kudos to you for being such a great guy and family person. Sorry to hear about the situation. I'd spend the money and fix the 330i. I think It would be 3k tops and save the money for your daughter's college fund.

Definitely agree with this. Since its all banged up already and you put money into repairs already, no point in getting a new car really.

Sorry to hear about your situation. It seems like there is more going on on her end, in other words she is in a 'I don't give a poop about the car' situation. Or, don't answer this, is she driving home after a night out at the wine bar with the girls?
I agree with the other posters - keep the car. Your selling prices are not very realistic, so fix the mechanical stuff, let the dust settle a bit, then go from there. Hang in there man! |

I'd fix all that needs to be fixed in regards to a safe running vehicle.
Get another set of wheels with more sidewall like a set of non-sport OEM 17" 335 / 330 wheels (Not sure if the 16" wheels on the 328 / 325 will clear the front brakes of the 330). Hopefully that'll last a bit longer if you currently have the stock 18" sport ones. Cleaning the interior shouldn't be too bad. I'd personally just leave the dents and scratches if they're inevitable. |
