Im actually glad its in impound.
Yeah its not a bad area by any means but its in the close vicinity of a slightly sketchy area (I'm always there). 96th and 2nd is a heavily traveled area since it is right by the exit of the FDR. I have a feeling the original thieves didnt even get a chance to come back but instead there was a second set of thieves who saw all the tickets and realized this was an abondoned and decided they could do a free pickup for parts which is probably why they didnt get very far nor even get the car open. It is very possible it was the original thieves though...

Your a good guy nybsbl04... giving me faith in the city again. Lived here all my life and never had an ounce of trust for anyone I dont know really. Owners should give you those 230s just for helping them locate their 40k+ car to them on goodwill alone.

2PM Yesterday:

I got into contact with the owners and notified that their car had been sitting in front of my building for two weeks, untouched. They were ecstatic to say the least. TO make a long story short, the owners' son had the car while in college at Boston and made a road trip to visit his friend in NYC. He had it parked outside, and a few hours later it was gone, stolen. They arranged to have him take a bus from Boston to NYC this friday to get the car as the insurance company overnighted him the keys.

9PM:

I come back from a late dinner and see 3 NYPD cars surrounding the 335i, which is now perpendicular on the road, with half of the car up on the side walk, and half in the road. I walk over to the officers and tell them my story, in which they were shocked, but believed me. It appears the thieves came back and tried to swing the car out of the spot they left it in. The car is still untouched and locked. They contacted the owners in California with the phone number I provided and contact the Auto Task Force to run the plates. The car was picked up by an NYPD tow truck and impounded. They think it's a car theft ring that uses frequency duplicators and tow trucks to take and read the wireless frequencies of the remotes.
way to go man. that was very nice of you.

heres an interesting article from C&D about stealing keyless entry frequencies. some of you may have read it before.

http://www.caranddriver.com/features...codes_-feature

according to the article, its virutally impossible to steal someones car this way:

Here’s how it works: To issue an unlocking/locking action, the transmitter sends a request to the receiver/control module in the car. With the request, the transmitter also sends a new code sequence and TIC to the receiver. To issue an unlock/lock command, the code sequence and TIC sent by the transmitter must be one that hasn’t been used before and the next—or one of the next few—in a planned sequence. This is what is known as a rolling code. And there aren’t just a lot of possible codes; there are a whole buttload of them—4.8 million billion combinations. So even if thieves did manage to steal the TIC and the code sequence from the transmitter, the chance of stumbling upon that crucial next code is one in 4.8 million billion. Good luck with that.

I remember reading another thread on this board about David Beckam's X5 being stolen. Something about it taking the thieves 20 mins to run through combination to open the lock. Reading mixed answers about this. Anyone want to chime in?

You sure this college guy didnt get drunk and forget where he parked, lol? How could thieves steal it, lock the door, then not be able to get it going again?

You guys are all overlooking the obvious. nybsbl04 is part of a car theft ring. He needed someone on here to run the VIN for him so that he could send his accomplices in Cali to the owners home to retrieve the fob. How Naive of you all.

Ok, seriously, good on you nybsbl04. It's much easier to just ignore something like that than to go out of your way to help out. A great quote from one of my favorite movies, Boondock Saints, "Now, we must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men."

+1 to the guy that said, may good karma come your way!

How did they disconnect the battery? It takes me a good 5 minutes to take out the bolt with pliers and remove the wire. And the battery is in the trunk anyways which is closed.
