Is it me, or did nobody else here notice the part where C&D said that the new engine is "even more eager" than the old one?

Like an earlier poster said, I'm sure both engines are fine. I just don't want to have any HPFP problems.

BTW, I've had an '07 335i sedan with the N54 engine (6mt) and have never had any fuel pump problems. I'm returning it today and should have my '11 335i coupe arrive from Euro Delivery in the next couple weeks.

I do not wish to settle any disputes between opposite opinions concerning the engines, just merely throwing in my own thoughts.

I think N55 is a result of incredibly serious innovation. By employing only a single turbo (in stead of a twin-turbo), you get an admirably more efficient engine with less consumption, less CO2 & whatnot, while performance stays the same (306 bhp). You should also get a more wider range of high-torque.

I think it is extremely clever and this is the reason why I love the Bayerische Motoren Werke.

I'm gonna get one of these new 335i coupes soon.

Consider both statements in my post together. If 1) BMW needs to keep manufacturing N54s for some period of time while N55 production ramps up, and 2) the N54 costs more to produce, don't you agree it makes sense to put the more expensive engine in the car that sells for a higher cost (with a little HP boost to make it worthwhile to the consumer)? That helps even out the profit margins, especially on the volume sellers like the standard 335i.

Arrow Test Drove 2011 335xi w/ N55

I felt less lag but less power too.. WOT was underwhelming coming from a stock 2008 335xi but i think felt smoother and the shifts felt faster. Does every 2011 335 have DCT.

Really nice car though, the only thing i didn't love were the new paddle shifters, left right rather than the initially weird push pull system that i got so used to. The paddles seemed harder to reach, no more down shifting with my thumbs

The push pull is great when you are turning. I can't imagine trying to figure out which one is which is if I had the new paddles. DCT is an option

The new X5 with the same motor is rated at 17 and 25mpg (better than my old 2008 X3 BTW which was rated 17 and 24). I wonder sometimes where people pull these ideas from without doing ANY research. The bottom line is both motors are so close that its a drivers race. If anyone comes on here claimin the new single turbo motor is def slower than their motor they are outright lying or have fooled themselves that what they own is surperior. If the accleartion is almost basically exactly the same and you get better mileage than the current motot then the choice is simple and I give the credit to BMW for making this happen.

I had a 2007 N54 335i sedan for three years, and now I've had the 2011 N55 coupe for almost two months.

I feel that that the N54 sedan was noticeably faster than this new N55 coupe. I have no measurements or times to corroborate my gut feeling, however.

Unless someone on here does a dyno and a run at a track with both cars (N55 vs N54), everything said is speculation. And you can't dyno a car that is not broken in yet, that would be pointless, unless you don't care bout the engine's condition... Agreed...Motor Trend=Consumer Reports for vehicles. They test and write articles about SUVs and Minivans.

Trust me, I would LOVE to be able to say unequivocally that the new N55 engine is more powerful and makes for a substantially faster car than the N54. But I'm telling you, right now I can't. I think the old outgoing car was a bit faster than the new one.

I dont know how many of the 2011 n55 owners have broken in their car yet but from my experience...(coming from an 07 335i) This new engine feels noticeably faster and stronger when you stomp on the throttle. I will admit that from a 2nd or 3rd or even 4th gear rolling start, the n55 take a split second longer to reach max power than the n54. However, when at a dead stop and launching the car, there seems to be more power resulting in faster acceleration compared to the n54. When Im in 1st gear and use the full rpm band (meaning I shift close to redline), the n55 reminds me of my N54 w/ the SSTT. It pushes through first gear in the blink of an eye. Then, when shifting to second gear, the rpms are lept high enough to feel the car pulling like a freakin freight train. That is why I am convinced the N55 is faster and stronger. Let the flaming begin

Maybe not substantially faster but definitely just as fast. Hope my post was detailed enough compared to the other posts regarding the n55.

Maybe it's just me, but I haven't seen the benefit of running all the way past 6000 rpm in 1st gear. Personally, I've found that shifting just before then results in faster acceleration... the push seems to peter out a bit past 6K.

I do agree that keeping this engine a bit higher in the rev band is more important than with the old N54. I swear, though, there were a few times when if I stomped on it in the N54, the acceleration rush was simply stunning. I haven't had that feeling in the N55 yet.

C&D likes to dump the clutch at redline. Do that and you too can go 0-60 in 4.9-ish seconds. In my car, I think I'll live with low 5s and not stress my car.

As for milage.....I average 22.5 combined in my 335i, with Dinan stage 2.
