Got a nail on my RFT but just realized my insurance is a ripped off...
Hi guys
I bought the Tire and Wheel insurance from my dealer 2 weeks ago and it cost me around $1000 for 5 years (i know, it is a rip off !!). After I learned about theautoclub.com from this forum, I will most likely yell at the dealership. But I can cancel it within 60 days and have my 100% refund. However, today I got a nail in my front left RFT. The light hasn't switch on yet and it is still maintaining the pressure. If I were to claim the insurance, I can't get the 100% refund back. It will only be prorated. Not sure how much though. Do you guys think that I should claim my insurance and then cancel it after that? Or should I just cancel the insurance and get my $1k back and fix the tire at a shop? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks. |

Depending on the where the nail is at, a tire shop might or might not be able to fix it. The price to plug a tire can vary between $20-$50, small price to pay especially if you are looking at cancelling the warranty and getting a new one for a better price.

yes, I would go to the shop and ask them if its fixable, if so just get it plugged and get your refund, then join theautoclub.com

our shops usually don't like to fix runflat tires with nails in them. (we do offer a warranty for them which replaces the tire for free NOT prorated). Its a risk to patch the tire b/c RFT's have a different kind of build and breaking that strong inner wall of the tire COULD cause an issue...no real evidence of either way, but better safe than sorry I say...

How much is it to replace the RFT? Any knows?
I'm thinking to claim the insurance with my dealer and then cancel it if the RFT replacement is expensive. That way I could still get the refund prorated. Should I pull the nail out if I have decided to claim my insurance? That thing is making funny noise when I am driving. Tks Last edited by csupernova; 09-30-2007 at 10:16 AM.. |

from my experience--i've gotten 2 flat tires within the first year of recieving my car, its generally about 1.1k for mount/balance/alignment/install/tires for a pair of RFTs at the tire shop. you pay that 1.1k in full first and then the company claims for you--usually you get around 1k back and that 100dollars is for the alignment which is not included in the rft insurance option.
imo its been worth it for me. but its up to 4k in claims in 5 years. i believe.

Autoclub limits are not that great, but it will cover you for at least two sets of RFT.
I had a sidewall bubble in my RFT after only 6000 miles - no rims damage or anything. I noticed while checking tire pressure before road trip (I check pressure every two weeks). My dealer warrantied the tire. When I return from the road trip 600 miles later, a bubble appears in the new tire - dealer warrantied it again because there did not appear to be any impact damage and the tire was so new. I kind of wish I added the BMW insurance to the purchase price, since that is accepted without hassle at BMW dealerships. |

I had the same problem with a nail last week (with only 1300 miles on the car!). Discount Tire pulled the nail, plugged the hole (you can do this safely on the Bridgestone RFT's) and rebalanced the tire. No charge, and it's working perfectly.
