Make sure you read the manual, there's something about blinker oil that needs to be added when you open the cooling system.

You should check if your system is leaking. Jack up the car (use jack stands) and remove the undercover (about 10 screws). Start the car and see if anything leaks (drips) on the floor. Do this at your own risk.

My advice only applies to people out of warranty. If you are within warranty, the fix is simple, just take it to the dealer, drink their coffee, relax, look around a little at the show floor models, then drive away in one of their loaners. Return and repeat for any other future problems.

no coolant light on, but the 'bobber" is just barely sticking out, so I want to add a little.

owners manual says coolant is a mixture of water and additives, what/where do i get the additives?

06 330i out of warranty, 58k miles

For a little, I'd just add distilled water. Higher water content is better for AZ (provides better cooling), I run 60/40 water/coolant and 1 bottle RL water wetter.

Normal, I have had 4 bimmers in 36 months and all needed a cup of coolant at some point. My Audi did the same and my neighbors 09 911 with 4k miles on just needed to be topped off. All german cars vent water vapor at some point to atmosphere via that special tank we have. Dexcool in the GM products functions the same way.

I encountered the low coolant light today with the check control message of "Insufficient coolant, engine damage may occur" when I started my 335d this morning. Checked the reservoir and it was bone dry. No puddles to be found anywhere. Activated BMW Assist, in the car, who called a flatbed which carried me and the car free of charge 86 miles to the nearest dealership. They gave me a free E90 328i loaner while my car sits overnight waiting on the parts to fix a busted coolant hose.
