I gotta question.....I plugged everything into the right spot and all but now my mirror compass doesn't show the direction and the parking garage thing doesnt work anymore...any ideas how to fix this??? Also, what amp of fuse should we stick back into the mini tap? Is the 5 amp (the brown one) enough??

Well you are using the homelink fuse for the detector, so something probably went wrong there. Did you take out #28 and connect it to the tap, then put the tap in the #28 slot?

Also remember to try the tap the other way, I always put it in upside down.

Wait, edit: you have an e90, read the rest of page one. The fuse layout is different in e90s.

Actually, even though I have an e90 my fuse box is in the exact same layout as yours ( I guess it comes down to when it was built not if it's an e90 or e92) anyway....I pulled it out and replugged it but nothing. Then I started thinking...why did it go out in the first place?? #28 is for PDC not the mirror..or at least it has a pic of what i think is pdc..

FYI...If you are doing this on an E92 (2008) the correct fuse would be #8. That controls the cigarette lighter accessories. I pulled #28 in my car and I got all sorts of issues. The fusebox layout is totally different.

Where exactly is the fusebox? Any pics of how to get to it?

Theres a billion pics but not needed. Open the glovebox. Take all the crap out you might have in there. Unscrew the two plastic screws on either side. Pull back of glovebox off. Look behind there and youll see the fusebox.

nice DIY...

kinda pissed i spent $35 at best buy to let them do it.... looks pretty simple.

let me ask you this too about the radar placement. doesn't the rear view or the overhead console block the sensor that would catch radar behind you?

I agree with HyperM3, I had to use Fuse slot #7 on my car. I just finished and it works perfect! Thank you all for the easy to follow photos and walkthrough. I will try to get some photos on it and post tomorrow. It's too dark now.

I'm getting ready to do this mod myself. I have a question about the fuse taps. The other links didn't work, but I found this http://www.autotoys.com/x/product.php?productid=7971. Is this the best place to buy them? I hate to by 10 when I only need 1, but what the hell. Unless someone else who bought 10 wants to send me 1 Antway, if I order these, do I order "tap only" or "Tap and Insulated Slade"?

You know what would be cool, but may be beyond me...is to hook this button into one of the unused buttons on the dash

I just realized these were $12.50 each, not $1.25 with a minimum order of 10. No way I am spending $125.

I just found them for $10 at Pep Boys. Now I'm ready to give this mod a shot

I just did it also, and I had to put in two fuses myself. Of course I didn't realize that until I had everything cleaned up and put away. The detector worked, but my Homelink and PDC did not, until I put in the other fuse. I also had a hell of a time tucking the wire into the door seal. I never could get some of it tucked in by the dash. I'll try it again another time. Anyone have any tricks for that?

Yes, you want to put the original fuse that was in the fuse box in, as well as a fuse for the radar detector. The fuses may have to bent upward away from the fuse box in order to clear the other fuses.

Where are you mounting the radar detector, near the sun roof controls, or near the dash?

The thing that's extra cool about those mini-taps is that it keeps the original circuit and it's own fuse separate from what you are adding. So each is protected by it's own fuse. This does mean that you do have to add a fuse (for that new circuit).
IE: you could tap into an existing 10 amp circuit, have it still protected by it's old 10 amp fuse, but the tap adds the new circuit that has whatever capacity of fuse the new circuit needs.

RE: Not being able to find a new 5-amp. You should replace the original circuit's fuse back with it's recommended capacity mini, ASAP (As Soon As Purchasable).
The new circuit's fuse should have a capacity that is determined by what is connected to that circuit. If all that's going on it is your Radar Detector, a 5 amp would be proper.

Remember what the point is of having a fuse, and having it sized correctly:
Their capacity is chosen so that it's not too low (where they incorrectly blow on what would otherwise be small and acceptable power spikes), or too high (where the power spikes are now powerful enough to scorch the expen$ive equipment and you want the fuse to blow instead).

To the OP: Check out the instructions for your specific unit. The location of a detector isn't a one-size-fits-all answer.

Some cars have sun-tint bands that extend down a few inches from the top of the windshield and have a metallic component and will block a considerable amount of radar, hurting the detectors ability to 'see'. So the detector needs to be mounted below.
Some detectors have a bulge with a laser viewing window that looks aft, so the detector needs to be places so that it isn't blocked by the rear-view or a visor.

To properly tuck behind the dash, I actually removed the A-pillar cover, its easy to do. I just wire tied the detector cable (a V1 in my case) to the other wires in the pillar, that way I know my detector won't become a projectile if the curtain airbags go off. Then you can just remove pull the trim off the rubber trim off the door surround (just pull, it come right off) enough to tuck behind and run to the fuse box.

Also, make sure you get the right fuse number to connect to. Not all e90,1,2,3 are the same. See my post at:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...14&postcount=8
for a fuse diagram for my 05/2008 e92

I can shift again! Had it hardwired to the fusebox and run up the A pillar and down the headliner. Have the Passport mounted to the right of the rear view mirror, and slightly above it. Remote mute is doubled taped to driver side, underneath the steering column.
