RB/OEM turbo install thread:

Been searching a lot on the web for install hints, tips, pics Ect (if this is posted somewhere delete this) and would have loved to find all of this in one spot so decided to post some links (have more but do not know if it is allowed LOL!!) here and hope other who have done this install can contribute as well. Anthing about this install is good (What to do first, second, what not to do ect): Rob beck did say NOT to go crazy on the bolt on the coolant/oil feed lines...they do not need much force.

Big thanks to "Rob Beck" & "M3Tuner" for there help & advice during this install thus far!

Thread of mine with some good reference pics also:

When doing the install I have found the following so far:

1. Remove the fan/FMIC to make water-pump removal easier
2. Install a new water pump/thermostat at time of install
3. Subframe does not need to be dropped (rob beck also confirmed this).
4. Have multiple jacks
5. Wear googles (not kidding)
6. Get replacement manifold studs, they will pull out. I have to loose a entire day because I did not do this.
7. Good time to clean your FMIC (see pic of tool below)
8. Will need a thin walled 1/4" drive 10MM socket or shave one down like I did below.
9. 3 Cans of parts cleaner to clean all oil & coolant lines (VERY important) plus all other parts.
10. 2 gallons of your choice of anti-freeze (I use 50/50 prestone extended life).
11. 7 quarts of motor oil of yor choice (I use Mobile 1 0W-40 European car formula).
12. Label everything!
13. This is my go to tool for O2 sensors, did a RB turbo install with it and over 10 dp installs...makes it so easy LOL!! Cut off the end with a dremel so you can get clearance and still have leverage.

Snap this pic to save some others headaches, when I took the coolant lines off the OEM turbos I must have pryed on the flange and it slight bent it and when installed on the RB's W/spacers it caused a gap. I fixed it by reinstalling the lines on the turbos and tightening down and bending flange back (do not do this with Rbs since it could strip the threads). I rather strip a OEM than a RB LOL!!!

I get what to do now, there are 2 spacers (1 for bolt stud & 1 for the line)....the upper line is made to seat into the stock turbo ( longer) so when you put the lines in on the RB flat flange there is a gap because it can not sink in.

Big thanks to: "cstavaru" for his input

Found out that a regular 10 MM socket or wrench has a bit of a tough time fitting on the "Front turbos" Coolant line nut, so instead of getting a thin walled socket a shaved down a 10MM 1/4" drive socket and it worked like a charm LOL!!

Here is a comparision of a regular socket and shaved socket going on the nut, as you can see a regular socket hits.

Some reference pics of the lines

Front turbo front:

Front turbo rear:

Rear turbo front:

Rear turbo rear:

Most people may know this but the tow hook can be used to lift the motor also...when on a jack it is pretty easy to lift the motor left and right to line up motor mounts by hand:

You can get this device if you want to support it from top with the tow hook:

Woah, I'm guessing that isn't your hand in the pic with the sockets? I mean its cool if it is, i'm not judging, but I would personally go for something slightly more subtle

I am liking this.

Can you give us more info on how you lift/support the engine with the tow hook please? Did you have to disconnect the engine from the transmission?
