So I took my car in to see if I had the dreaded N52 tick. Dealer called back this morning with a quote for over $2000 for new lifters. Does that sound right? Considering my ass is flat broke it looks like I will be living with the noise.

Has anyone replaced the lifter on their own? What parts are needed? I am pretty handy so I may consider doing this myself if feasible.

From what I heard, the engine has to be taken apart. There is no mechanical problem with the lifters, just the annoying noise.

One shop quoted me about 800 bucks for the job, the parts itself is 12 dollars a piece, the rest of it is labor.

So if you can live with it, then I recommend not to fix it. BTW, my dealer quoted me 3k for the job. Lol

One suggestion here, i dunno for BMW but i managed to shut up the lifters on a vw passat by adding some sorts of additive to the oil, some whatever from my local car parts shop. To change the lifters you have to take off the cam axles which involves taking the timing chain off. IMO it's not really a thing i'd try allthough i work as a mechanic. BMW looks so freakin complex :<

Agree. After regular oil change, the noise seems to disappeared. I didn't add anything to the oil tho.

Well to update this thread as well I heard back from the dealer this morning. The SA that called said they heard back from BMW NA and are willing to cover 50% of the original $2134 I was quoted.

Also part# 11-33-7-631-589 is the latest roller drag lever and according to the SA replaces the cylinder head solution. He stated they haven't done a CH replacement now for some time in regard to this issue.

I noticed the veryy annoying tick noise after changing oil brands and weight. I now run mobil 1 full syn with 0w-40 but after adding lucas oil stabilizer (full syn) the annoying tick seems to have went a bit more to feint than noisy. Just a thought, try it out. After all, it couldn't hurt. Btw, I only used 6 qts. Of regular oil to 1 qt. Of stabilizer. Try using 2 quarts of OS to 5 qts. Of regular oil. it might just eliminate the sound for good. Not to mention the gears and pistons will be extremely well lubed up and won't burn as fast being as the OS is super thick like honey

I had the ticking noise before, well I still do have it but it's been about 5 months now since it last ticked. If it's present at start up till the rpm's drop to 600 then drive around till your engine is at operating temperature, it'll be gone when you stop and park it.

I always let my car warm up for about a minute, let the rpm's drop down to 600 after starting it which is one way to avoid it, that is if it's not present on start up. It's not worth fixing it for that price when there's a temporary fix, which there is a saying when people say their engine is ticking "Quit driving like a grandma"

The ticking will just end up coming back. Save the money and move on!

I have the ticking in my 325i, but its not as bad and happens once in a while, once engine warms up its quiet. I learn to live with it, until winter comes and then its every other day lol

I had mine replaced under warranty, they finished it in a day. They didnt fix the problem, i still hear a loud ticking when i start her up.

On mine, they changed exhaust valves under warranty, it was quiet a long time and now 2-3 years later it is back with a vengeance - even warm.

Frankly, I am getting more and more fed up with those stupid annoyances.

I just got mine back from the dealer today, took them a day to replace the lifters and rockers, i got mine done under an extended warranty i bought for the car so i only paid the $50 deductible, but i added up all the part numbers on my invoice and they totaled about $350, so 2k sounds high. also my dealer told me that 30% of the time the ticking comes back even after the lifters and rockers get replaced, if it does come back they told me to bring the car back and they replace the whole head, which from some of the readings i have done if your not under a warranty could cost upwards of 4k

I had the lifter fix done under CPO 3 weeks ago and the tick was still there, just more intermittent/less often. They also mentioned they put in some "new" roller drag lever that is a recent addition to their tick fix and that the head replacement is not required anymore. Yet I took it back in last week and they couldn't reproduce the sound, but I gave them video proof and now they have the head on order for me. I wouldn't bother with the lifters from my experience especially if it costs more than the 50 bucks for CPO. Hoping when the I take it in next week that the new head fixes it permenently. 2008 328xi, N52 engine.

Well I am WAY out of warranty so it looks like I'll be living with the ticking. I was hoping I could do the lifters as stated in my OP, but if I need a new head forget it. Unless BMW would replace it at no charge......HA.....fat chance on that.
