the recent conclusion is that 1.8" drives use less power on average than 2.5" drives so why did you buy a 2.5" drive? The other thing that you can learn from this thread is that not all cars are created equal. Probably not all of the same drives are created equal, but more likely, the slight differences in each cars power generaton for accessories means there is no guarantee that if a certain drive works in 1 car, it will work for all. Plus your comparing a US spec car with a different country spec. Unless you can't survive with 160gb, you should have gotten a 1.8" drive. ... and another thing, I don't like your tone. Your suggesting that Dr. Dirt is at fault for the drive not working in your car, all he said was that the drive works in his car, information that you can do with what you will. Certainly, he is only trying to be helpful.

Man im just pissed because i spent hours and hours collecting music and idtagging them and then it doesn't work. and i have to do it all over again. Im not accusing anyone and i totally understand that different cars might have different power output etc.
Should i have been quiet and not saying that the Buffalo 300gb 4200rpm drive doesn't work? Because it doesn't work. And therefore noone should buy such drive to their car. I think that i and everyone in this thread is trying to find out which drives work and dont work. Let's help each other instead of arquing. |

The buffalo drive worked for 1 of 2, so with only a 50% success rate, you took a gamble and did not take avantage of what has been learned about other drives in this thread. Now the buffalo has a 33% success rate. I still don't understand why you chose this drive over other more proven to work models. If you need 300gb, the fujitsu is the only one other on the list and it has only a 60% success rate.

Why would you have to do any of that over again? Did the car destroy the files on the drive or something? Just find a drive that works and copy the files to it.

The Iomega drive I have came with the dual USB connectors on one end and I purchased the i109 from http://www.i-luv.com/iLuv/product_in...roducts_id=300 and I have had no issues.
If anyone is interested I still have the dual cable I ordered from Western Digital. Never used. Selling for what I paid.

Just tried the Lacie 60GB drive in my brothers brand new X5 delivered yesterday and it doesn't work !! The drive was actually bought for his car so he's slightly pissed
Maybe the USB cable run is longer in an X5 compared to a 3 series, he's tried a 60GB ipod with no issues |

Besides that fact that it was an X5, its also in the U.K., and nano is located in Finland so U.S. spec cars may be somewhat different than Euro. Again more data is needed.

Another possible, wrinkle:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5873 Not sure how this guy works, seems like a lot of cable and I'm not sure how it could boost the power, but might be worth a shot for some of those people out there that already bought an HD and are having power issues.

Hi,
I actually bought a 1.8" HDD (Toshiba 80GB - ZIF connector - MK8009GAH) assocated with Ice BOX. It works great and I can hear that as soon I open the doors of the car, the HDD start to be read by the car. Just one think : be carefull with the types of connectors on 1.8 disk. Best Regards Docles |

Yes,
ICY BOX is an enclosure : http://www.raidsonic.de/en/pages/pro...hp?pid=2_1_1_2 1.8" hdd's come with either LIF connector or ZIF connector. Thus, you should have the enclosure that provide the right connection. BR Docles |

BTW, I just ordered an 80GB 1.8in drive from overstock.
Grand Total w/shipping was $92.25 before 11% discount. Seems like a great price. If anyone is interested in getting an additional 11% off this purchase, I can send them a referral link. PM me if interested.

Quick update on the IOMagic 40GB drive as I've had it for a while now. The enclosure (not the drive) is definitely having a problem with our famous NJ potholes, I've had 2 small plastic pieces already detach inside the case and rattle around till I removed them. The drive is doing fine and works 100% of the time.
