turbo lag?

hmm...have a 335i as a loaner today.. have a 6 speed e46 m3 in the shop. love the car, but it appears that once you smash the pedal, there is a 2-3 second delay before you feel anything. its horribly annoying to say the least. i tried to switch lanes to accelerate ahead of an oncoming car, the car just stood there long enough to almost cause an accident. it then finally jetted forward. is this typical? is there a way to get around this....aargh. never driven a turbo before and if this is the norm, i never will again.

Is the 335 an auto? As far as turbo lag- there pretty much isn't any. You just may have been in the wrong gear and the transmission took a second to find the right one.

I have test driven two 335i and felt none of the turbo lag you describe. One of the tests was an auto, and it had no lag.

What you may be seeing is a slight delay before the AT downshifts. Put the AT in sport mode and it will downshift much more readily. Try it out.

There is no lag, I think your looking for a lag, this car is possibly faster off the line than your M3.

With the automatic, from a standstill, there is definitely a big lag. From a dead stop, if I mash the pedal to the metal, it does feel like 2 seconds before real acceleration begins.

Also, if you're just in "D" drive mode, it does take a little time for the transmission to kick down to a lower gear for acceleration. So I like to drive in "DS" mode to keep the engine in the power band for instant acceleration.

The flipper shifter is good, but through corners, they're useless...

Must be an Auto...if it is you gotta use the manual mode and just downshift like you would any other stick. Never have lag unless I use the full auto mode or forget to downshift.

No lag in my 6MT at all! That includes on the track where lag would be felt BIG TIME and be REALLY scarry! I am really impressed with the turbos!

In what sense? If you mean that it shifts faster, then no, it doesn't. If you mean it has less turbo lag then again, it doesn't. If however you mean that you always know what it's doing and the shifts always happen on time and when you expect them then :rocks:

The throttle response of the E46 M3 is exceptional with its individual throttle bodies. Coming from the M3, most other vehicles seem to have less responsive throttle. Having said that, it doesn't mean that the M3 is quicker, just that it has a very responsive throttle in comparison.

2-3 second delay?!? Coming from a turbo s2k, my 335 doesn't seem as responsive, but it has almost zero lag and instant torque whenever I need it to pass someone with no delay. I have a 6MT so I can't comment if your car was an auto that you test drove, but unless you were in the wrong gear i've never experienced anything like that before. Like all turbo cars, if its 90 degrees out and your engine is heat soaked, then driving off easy from a stand still then the car will have some noticeable lag, but that's about it really.

all turbos have lag. there is a lag with the 335, but it isn't much in the world of turbos. 2 - 3 seconds is a bit of an exaggeration

Were you in D mode?

The D mode is rather slow. That wouldn't happen in DS or in M mode at right revs.

well, it could be a 6MT on 6th gear cruising on 1000rpm. than I believe that w/o changing gears it took like 2-3s to get to 1500rpm where U get the juice...

pls don't kill this thread argumenting why is the MT better like the AT and vice versa, it's so tiresome and boring reading all the same crap all the times... rather gather some info from the OP and find the solution

That is really hard to belive because the 335 and m3 are pretty much even until around 80+mph where the m3 will start walking away. And from your info, you say you have a 330 and you say you pulled on him in 3rd gear.

Unless you have some insane mods or m3 cant drive, i call bs.
