aFe Stage 2 installed. My thoughts.

Took me at most 30 minutes to install. Had to screw with the lower metal piece to make it fit properly (Xi thing). Love the sound, not so thrilled about the performance right now. 3 things are coming to mind right now that could be the main issue. 1) I need to disconnect the battery for a while and let the whole damn thing reset. 2) Go through all of the connections and make sure everything is sealed properly. 3) Figure out how to make the stock plastic box acordian style connector fit properly in the new metal sleeve.

Is there a dedicated write up to this shit? I'm not messing with it anymore tonight but I'm just grateful I didn't buy this damn thing new right now. I'm sure I screwed up somewhere, just not 100% sure. (Yes the bell connector is installed correctly, I double checked that shit before I even started the car.)

The thought crossed my mind to just replace the shit tube from the manifold to the box with aluminum and couplers and throw a drop in in the box. I've still got all my stock parts laying in the aFe box right now just in case I do decide to shit can this thing. The only thing that's stopping me right now is the fact that Gavin says he uses it. It's gotta be worth something when its working properly for him to use it over the stock box.

The afe loses a lot of back pressure that the stock airbox is able to create. I put in the afe and noticed the same drop in responsiveness and torque and yet reinstalled the stock box noticed it return. I'm working on trying to mod mine with scoops and some sort of mod to help with this but as of yet haven't thought of anything.

I Agree though... The sound is killer! Haha

Depends what works for people? Its a biased comment, what may work for me may not work for you.. But ya , all the intake mods and bla they are so minimal in gains , i would say a K&N filter with the charcoal delete and call it a day. Not much power you should expect or gaine from a filter .. Have you looked int oa software tune? Id recommend that

I'm gonna play around with it some more tomorrow. If I don't like what I get as an end result, its going buh bye. I'm all for great sound but I'm not gonna lose performance in the process.

Software is being put on hold until I get the headers installed. I'm still debating if the 3 stage manifold swap is worth the money...

Heres 2 options i think would be worthy, do your mani swap , headers, tune, and then a 50-75 shot dry/wet NOS , whatever you perfer. or option 2 supercharger/turbo if and when a decently priced one will come out lol

I think I'm gonna stay N/A. If I wanted a 335 I would have got one in the first place. I just don't like how shitty the low end torque is stock on our motors. Being AWD doesn't help either.

Idk, I'll see what I can do tomorrow with this thing but I think I should have listened to my gut and worked with the stock box. Still, at least I'm not out $400.

Hey bro,
I did have this intake before, and tested a lot with it. Recent I posted in a thread that I have gone back to the k&n drop in + scoops and carbon filter delete, and a secondary inlet. I, like yourself felt underwhelmed with it. The sound is amazing, but unless your up at 5500rpm all the time, it doesn't serve its purpose.

I found that on a dyno you get more consistent power with the drop in setup, and with a free flowing exhaust it actually puts down more power then the afe..

I'm really sorry to put this in ur thread, but I don't want info to get mixed up. This is also only my personal experiance with it. Sorry :/

Glad you clarified this info for me. I'll see what I can do with it here tomorrow but I'm thinking This other setup I have in mind will be better in the long run. Appreciate the heads up.

Go with BMW performance. You can find them used for around $500. They don't sound as aggressive as the AFE but they don't loose HP. Form the inside the sound difference is small but from the outside it's loud at full throttle. You can also go with gruppeM but they're MONEY. Dinan has an interesting solution but it's also expensive and involves cutting a hole in your air box.

I say drive the car for a while. I didn't feel much of a difference with my Dinan until I had about 100 miles on my car. I can definitely feel a harder charge at the top end with my car. Let your computer adjust to the new part and see what happens.

Hey Craven 328, is your secondary inlet the same as the Dinan Ram Air mod?

Very close, but without cutting the bumper.

I took the air inlet for the drivers side brake duct (which doesnt do anything anyway for the brakes) and ran a pipe out of it and into the side of my aFe and Stock box. Works wonders.

Just installed my AFE. Greaat sound, and its only up in the high rpms so it doesn't bother you on the highway. As far as power, I guess I haven't had my car long enough to feel anything too major. Maybe a little bit at the top end and a little less on the bottom but nothing I can put my finger on personally and according to my videos my 0-60 is about the same.

i thought about doing the something with my car when i had the AFE installed but never had time to do it

i went ahead and removed the flap in the wheel well behind the drivers headlight because i was hopping it would get some cooler out side air in there when the tire spinning. Sure you have to clean your filter more but who cares if it just might be cooler in there

Since Craven 328 says the air duct for the brake does nothing so I can use it for the secondary inlet, that removes a major hurdle.

I just installed this, and it doesnt sound as nice as the one on my e46. Does anyone think if I take the aFe cover off of the e90 it will sound better? or will this do more harm than good?
