Yes I'll give you that. My initial outburst was biased because majority of the Detroit built cars lack the refinement. And I do agree that it has nothing to do with the actual workers, but it does have to do with the corporate philosophy and guidance so perhaps there is no problem with the 3er being built here.

Its not where the car is built (well maybe in China), it is how it is designed and the equipment used to build them.

GM makes crap because the cars were designed like junk, not because of the workers (sure they may be a bit slower).

Check the X3/Z4 boards those cars are pretty reliable, and definitely not less so then the German built 3 series.

Well, they recently increased their pricing by ~2.1%, they will keep that extra margin of profit and started building vehicles in NA; they are cutting costs by travel/importing and keeping extra profit, many consumers may look at another brand...there are many competitors.

BMW is moving to a pull model of sales so they probably won´t mind losing the customers who can´t truly afford a BMW when it´s priced at realistic market rates instead of the highly-subsidized rates that have prevailed in the past few years.

Besides being designed in Germany, you might be interested to know that much, if not all, of the manufacturing equipment is built in Germany using German (or European if German is not available) and then shipped here. Even test and QC equipment is generally German. About the only thing not German are some of the employees.

We sell some force sensors and data acquisition system to the plant and know of the difficulties in getting domestic equipment in there. What we sell them is actually Swiss but is as close to German as could be had.

very true on the toyota comment. if someone would have told you 10-15 yrs ago that theyre gonna make toyotas in the U.S with the same quality and it also would become the 2nd largest car manufacturer in the world u would have laughed. but its true. and dont be surprised when it passes GM eventually and becomes #1.

Yup, there goes BMW... good I have another reason to move on to Porsches
I'd suggest some of you take a stroll down the assembly lines at the European automakers and check out who is building the cars. It is a very mixed group of people. I was surprised on a couple of my visits.

As others said, each part of the world has its strength and weaknesses. I believe the auto manufacturing process in Germany is better. There are plenty of other things that are far better here in US than anywhere else, and my desire to drive a German built car in no way contradicts to my love for the country I now reside in.
+100 - Well stated. My thoughts exactly.

As long as the engineering and designs stay German it still is a German car. I feel more comfortable for it built here than south America.

VW Beetles are manufactured in Puebla, Mexico. I don't know where you learned your geography, but Mexico is part of North America.

I wouldn't be concerned about the 3-series being built here in SC.
I am on my 6th BMW since 1994, and the most problem free one I had was my 97 Z-3 built in SC.

I was the one with Toyota Camry from Kentucky and trust me after 3 years of ownership car had big problems with ABS,etc. Just right after the warranty expired. I just got rid of that junk.
