So I went to the dealership today to have some scheduled maintenance done and on the work order they listed a few other items they noticed. One of those items listed was that the oil filter housing gasket needed to be replaced. they had a listed price of $697!?!?! Really?? I looked up the gasket (part# 11427537293) and it is like a $12 part. So what gives with the dealer pricing???

It's not a mistake. I didn't search the forum first and was raped. It ran me $680 here in Dallas for the work and $32 part. Oh well...search forum and learn is the lesson.

^^^ If you spent $680 for the changing of an oil filter gasket alone and you have the receipt, I'm pretty sure a stern conversation with the owner of the dealership in which you mention you will be sending a copy to BMWNA might get you a refund. That's ridiculous.

not only is it 680, but i guarantee they dont have the gasket part in stock but youll be in the same boat as me and they will have your car for almost 2 weeks because they didnt want to spend the 6 bucks for over night shipping, and then will break a coolant hose in the process that I HAD TO PAY FOR. What could of taken me 3 hours and 50 bucks worth of material ended up costing me $$$ and 2 weeks without a car or a loaner.

I did end up doing this myself. It took me awhile, but it's fixed and I saved myself some $$$.

Damn! I just had my valve cover gasket and all the bolts replaced last week at a local Indy. Final price was $595.00 for parts and labor, which I didn't mind paying for.

Where did you get yours done?

it was a quote from my local stealership. i immidiately said no thanks. went online to order the parts and gettin it installed at a certified indy. total will be around 300~ including parts.

what torque did your indy use for your bolts?? thats the only thing im worried about.

Ok, let's back up. I know it's a stealership but scheduled maintenance sounds like warranty to me. They hide all kinds of cost, including the "service" advisors rates when it is warranty maintenance. If you aren't paying, it is negotiated costs with BMW NA and is good for a laugh when you get the ticket back.

All non warranty work is negotiable and you deserve to be robbed if you take their first three "estimates" seriously as the advisor is commissioned on the margin he can take from you.

If you can't do it yourself or get the parts at the dealer, find an indie shop that can do it a lot cheaper. Mine would change a valve cover gasket for me at their parts cost and a six pack.

i dont think thats how it works..

dealerships tend to charge whatever the MSRP value is from bmw. As for labour they use estimated number of hours from bmw themselves. times that by the hourly rate (usually $100-$130) and you get these outrageous quotes.

That I don't remember, but I do remember them doing the research to get the correct torque for the new bolts. Should be pretty easy to find....

I had my valve cover gasket and spark plugs done a few months ago and it was $750 including parts. It was done at a local BMW Indy shop.

That conversation might resolve things --- with a satisfied customer at the end. However, why does it have to come to that? Why can the dealer just be more forthcoming and quote $20 for part (not including coolant replacement) and 1.5 hrs for labor (say ~ $150). Why do they have to play the game?

That's why in the end I ended up just fixing it myself as I mentioned earlier. If I can do the job myself I will. I only take the car to the dealer for the scheduled maintenance and repairs I will not be able to do.
