Views on Merc A class?
Mrs wants another car and likes the look of those tiny Mercs.
Anyone with knowledge/info on them on here? All info -good or bad

Test drove one for same reason just over two years ago. a 200cdi - totally gutless and a dismal autobox. My missus thought it looked nice, built well, good visibility, but drove shite.

If she wants something small but reasonable practical that looks and drives great, my wife recommends this...
I absolutely love it. It's quiet, refined, economical, turns heads, drives nicely and costs zero road tax! Having said that, it's not cheap to buy.

That looks nice in the blue, keep seeing red and white ones and they look tat, but the blue and the grey ones look really nice.
A Class, don't bother, they are fine but not great and new one is out before the end of the year. We have just been looking for a smallish, economical car and tried loads, including Golfs, Leons, Alteas XL (very good), Volvo V60, Volvo C30 (also excellent) and have decided on an X1. |

A- class are tiny and these day svery old design, new one is coming this or next year.
we have a B-class and its a deceny enough car but while chassis is good the engine CDI200 is just old underpowered and bad on fuel especially comparing to the new engines. If it has to be a Merc then wait for new one otherwise go for the A1, or even new MINI

I already suggested a Golf and that's what I'd pick for her. She's after something a bit more unique. Bear in mind, she has been driving a Xsara Picasso for the last few years!

I didn't think it mattered being a second car, but if you are going to use it of course it matters. I know many people don't like them, but we just bought this X1. It rode superbly, as fun as the 1 series and more comfy than the E91, plus it felt fresher than the 3 series. Wasn't something we considered when looking at all, just that my guy at BMW was raving about the one they had on their fleet and said he kept taking it home. Because of residuals good price too. |

I love it, the rest of the range are just looking old hat now.
When you walk round Mercedes and even Volvo, the BMWs are looking dated, the X1 and the 5GT just look fresh and modern. They should have kept Bangle imho and brought some even more radical designs out. |

18d and SE, oh, and a manual!!
Seriously, this is a car that will sit in the garage, last year the second car did 2000 miles. I wanted it as cheap as possible not to buy but to run insurance wise, BIK tax wise if I do it as a company car and road tax wise. I am thinking of a 535d GT for my main car. |

Gizze man, thought with all your merc chat thesedays you wouldn't have wanted a BM - although inspired by your posts I checked out the new C Class coupe, very nice.
Anyway did you check out the Yeti as a second car? I actually think it's a bit of a 'cheaper' but worthy alternative to the X1...

The Merc is staying, this is just a second car.
I am sure the Yeti is excellent, but a bit too boxy design wise for me. The Merc will be replaced by another Merc, E320cdi will go for an E350cdi, the only thing that may get me back into a BMW as the main car is the 5 GT, but if I have the use of one every day anyway may as well have the Merc so it's a bit different, just that with the X1 there I may go for a coupe rather than an estate. |
