Fuel gauge issue?

Looked at the fuel gauge this afternoon and it showed just over half a tank? I filled it up just a couple of days ago and done 50 miles since ....
I then watched it literally drop a little in 5 miles, then I stopped, looked underneath convinced I had a fuel leak, but nothing. Filled the car up (only took £15) and the gauge shows three quarter full. Obviously the computer is calculating the range off this. Any thoughts?

Not directly related to the fuel gauge but range can vary wildly as it's calculated on the mpgs you were getting in the last couple of miles. i.e. Motorway speeds, it stays high. Start stop driving, it plummets.

Range = total in the tank / Recent mpgs

I once drove over a pretty big pothole and it shook the connector out the back of the instrument cluster. It made every needle stick in that position and the center display go blank. Maybe this is a bit loose on yours and has upset the full/empty position of the fuel gauge?

This is just a guess but the cluster is only 2 Alan key screws to get out so maybe worth a check? It might also reset the needles if you unclip the connector and then reattach.

Jesus that must of been more of a pit to shake the connector out considering its clamped in place.

Yeah. Pretty standard round my way now though. I think it was more shaken loose over time though as it still looked to be clamped in place and the instrument cluster didn't actually freeze until the next day when I went over a speed bump quite normally.
