Talking Stupendous!! 8Gb of MP3 on the sat nav DVD slot!

Finally got around to burning a Dual Layer 8Gb MP3 disc - and it's fantastic!

Yes, it's fast, does not skip, and has over 2,200 tracks Hundreds of Artists and Albums. Is correctly mapped out in terms of folder structures for Artsts/Albums/Tracks.

With this much Music there really is no point in an Ipod accessory option!

Maybe this is old news to some... but it's such good news it needs to be broacast reguarly for those who have missed it.

The only snag is I have now ditched suing my Sat nav!

great news, now if only I can figure out how to get nav and dvd mp3 working at same time. Wish our 'media' drive was a dvd drive.

Anyone want to try burning a DL 8GB disc with BOTH nav and mp3 to see if you can get it to work at same time?

Hahahaha! Nice work Dave!

I don't think it will be possible to have the SatNav data & the mp3 data usable at the same time, because once the CCC starts reading in the SatNav boot info, it will ignore the mp3 data.

...but I don't suppose there's any harm in trying it out...I'd like to be wrong this time!

All the best.

my thought exactly! you really only need this much music on long roadtrips, when navi is crucial for you. so it's kind of fighting itself. that's when AUX and an MP3 player come in the play...

Not really... I make the same mundane journey to work and back every day... for that I do not need that Sat Nav, and then Having 8Gb music is great, I can change styles of music etc....

At weekends, I go touring and then the Sat Nav comes into it's own, and then I switch to the modest 700Mb CD which still holds massive amounts of music.

It is often overlooked by the iPod integration owners that when you have a DVD you can still create the exact same groupings as the integration ipod Kit as follows

By using the folder structure before burning the artists you can still do

CD01 = Playlists
CD02 = Artists
CD03 = Albums
CD04 = Genre
CD05 = Podcasts

Random can be done any time anyway so no need for
CD06 = Random 500 tracks

So I know that it is often quoted as the main reason for the int kit…. But at around $500 before iPod, then the $8 for 5 discs… makes it a very good option.

P.S. I do own an iPod, and used to connect it, but as it was at risk of being stolen, and as at that time it was dangerous trying to see track listings... I got into burning Cd's than DVD's.

Hey we knew a while back that you could play MP3 DVD's. Its an awesome idea, the only problem is that you cant use your Navi.

All my music is in AAC format in iTunes. I have thought of doing a DL DVD, but couldn't be bothered converting my music across, and my DRM locked songs purchased from iTunes won't convert without some cracking software that has to play the song in real time ... I have nearly 60Gb of music anyway, so the iPod interface is the best option for me personally.

I am torn a little...I have 67Gb and rising, so an iPod interface makes sense... but I have kids and other finacial commitments and the kit is expensive + I might even have to get a new iPod. ( secretly I would like that too... 67 into 30 does not go)... so I am making the best of the DVD.

Ideally, you'd want to burn a data CD with the navi information for the 500miles around you. I wonder if thats possible and whather the navi can access the CD rather than the DVD. To me, it seems like they are both just data drives and all of the applications (entertainment and navi) have access to both.

This is what's holding me back... granted, I only have 1/10th of the music you have it's still a major PITA to do. Plus, I would want both Nav and the MP3 disc to be able to work simultaneously. It's too bad that BMW doesn't have 2 DVD drives, so you could play CD's and DVD's in the non-Nav drive.

This will answer JSpira's thought on Ipod's key benefit

If you read the >500 posts on the iPod Most integration kit, one of the key reasons that is quoted for the iPod kit being better is that the Ipod kit allows multiple views via its

CD01 = Playlists
CD02 = Artists
CD03 = Albums
CD04 = Genre
CD05 = Podcasts

But the photos below show it is all easily possible via DVD AND in a better format... you do not need to remember what CD03 etc.. is.

Before it is pointed out that 8Gb will limit it...

With 4 Categories... that's 2 Gb each AND
If you put say Genres on 1 disc.. that's 8Gb for Genres.. alot!!

Unless you are a courrier, I am not sure why people need their sat nav everyday... it's nice... but you can always pop this sat nav disc in when needed.

This reminds me.. The manual in the sat nav section (Page 124) , says that you can remove the sat nav disc AFTER a route had been started and that it would continue without the disc, this is to allow you to listen to music!

How come no one mentions this.... I have to say though this is not my experience!.

Unfortunately, that is only vaild for the Business Nav, Dave- not for Sat Nav Pro.

You end up spending more & you get 'less'! :mad:

All the best.

It is easier than it looks to create the layout....In essence...
  1. On your hard drive create a folder structure that matches the Music and or categories you want, name them as you wish, include, space charachters etc
  2. In the folder created add the Music you want for that category. For Artists, that would be another folder for the Artist name, then another folder for the Album name, then the tracks.
  3. Using Nero (prefered) or similar, Create a new Data CD or DVD. use settings as stated in other threads in the forum. If you can't find then I can post them.
  4. Drag over your complete folder structure to Nero and Burn

It realy is that simple.

The DVD now acts like the iPod MOST, but with Labled categories

thanks!!!
just to make sure I understand - if I have Eric Clapton CD and I want it to appear under Artist - Eric Clapton - Album X, then I also want it in Genre - Rock - Eric Clapton - Album X, then in Albums - Album X...
will that create this or not???

The DVD method will not seach 1 database as in the iPod, thus to have the same album in more than 1 category means placing the MP3 file in more than 1 category. This of course means that the same song could be on the dvd 3 or 4 times.. wasting space. This is also a problem for iPods to some degree as they do not use an intelligent database and you end up with duplicate songs their too but maybe to a lesser degree. Thus alot depends on the size of your MP3 collection.

For me personally I will create 1 DVD for Artists, another for Genres etc. This way duplicates occur less often and utilise the space better.

I often have long conversations about how itunes does not manage duplicates very well.

So to summarise, the way you described it above is correct, but you would need to place the whole album twice onto the DVD, once in genres, and once in Albums.

thanks again! and probably the last question... how many folders can I have? I would go with folders by Artist and that would create even 30 folders quite easy. will I still be able to access them?

Yes.. providing the car's software is new enough to support MP3 in the first place... and that can be upgraded if it is not..

A 2006 car should be OK
