I'm on disc 3 92%, but now i'm only doing short trips and keep stopping the car.

Then every time it starts again it asks for disc 1 again, then it realises it's done disc 1 and asks for disc 2, then realises it's done disc2 and asks for disc 3, then it continues with dics 3.

PITA.

Hope i'll get it finished before 2014 maps come out!

So close to the end it really starts to speed up in the update process.

Can't you sit in the car for 10 additional minutes and let it finish? Rather than going through that disc 1, then disc 2, then disc 3 malarkey!

Thanks for that Mike - if that's the case then I'm not gonna hang around in this bloody cold car for too much longer!

I had a 2hr 30 minute journey yesterday which nearly finished it.

Now it's just small trips, still seems to be going slow i.e. 0.1% every minute.

I use a van for work most days, it was a special trip in the car to get the damn nav upgraded.

Might have to go to work in it tomorrow too! That'll be 300 miles on the car just to upgrade the NAV!

at 50p/mile av running cost that's another £150!!

You're right, but I don't fancy leaving the car outside running for 3 hours!

Or taking time off work to sit in the car park doing the same....

Or persuading the missus / neighbours I'm not some wierdo who sits in his car on the drive for 3 hours...

Ohh, never mind

Just when it's at 92%, I see it only being another 10 to 20 mins tops

Okay all done, took around 2.5 hrs.

Now have 7 digit post-code entry (no need to enter street name).

Well worth it, even though back-ache is now worse! Right, now off to crack open a beer.

Yes, if you have a usb port under the armrest.

As far as I know it doesn't work using the usb port in the glovebox.

Not tried it, but I seem to think it does work from the glovebox port . . . .

So could I run the update from a HDD via USB ? Transfer rate might be quicker ? So I am thinking extension lead for power from house to car then HDD to USB - that will work right ?

never tried it from a HDD, but a memory stick can be used. As I said, my download from 3 x DVDs only took an hour.

May be a couple of issues here:

The system is looking for 3 discs, so you would have to partition your HDD into the 3 discs, with appropriate disc labels.
The system may not be intelligent enough to search for each disc automatically, so you will still need to prompt it (or will it just "see" the first one???)
You'll have to use a powered HDD in case the glovebox port isn't man enough to supply power to the HDD (the manual says not to connect external HDD's to the USB port, but this might just be a BMW get-out clause for popping the power supply)

Give it a go - what have you got to lose? An hour or so . . . . .

Mike

You don't need to partition the disc but you do need to put the three images into three folders. There are some instructions somewhere floating around. It doesn't save much time on the update per se, it just saves you the hassle of cutting three dual-layer DVDs.
