+1, he was talking about the dealer being able to "read" your car's ECU

Is that a part number for the documentation (shown in the picture) and 488 is the software?

two questions:

1- Is that price includes the black grills? (I don't need that)
2- I understood earlier that was available for the N54 if you have to have the M Sport pckg.

No, another reason its a "ripoff" after the fact.

$550 from the factory includes 2 sets of grilles and a tune, installed.

$1200 at the dealer just gets you a tune.

that price difference is too big to justify.

Hmmm. As of this afternoon we could not find a price for this yet. In fact a recent bulletin says another two weeks for that.

I wonder if your dealer just didn't make up a price so he could sell it to you.

Some people have already purchased this and had it installed? So I am not sure how that jives with what you are saying.

*edit - I see what you are saying. the dealer just made up a price... I see that as very possible!

I'm trying to figure out if this Tune is worth it since I work for BMW I pay for it at cost which is $891 tax included with a free install. I'm also wanting to know if I can run my JB+ on top of the tune??

I would highly doubt it but I could be wrong.

Since you work for BMW shouldn't you answer those questions for us?
Why can't you go over to one of the SA or the parts guy and find out?

They didn't even know what the part number was when i had them look it up aside from saying it was a download and an ECU Tune, There was very little documentation on it.

$891. Okay, looks like I'll have to look it up myself. I really don't see why this is priced higher as a retrofit than as a factory or VPC added option.

That's what I'm wondering too. It's limited for manual and DCT but full 50 Nm for the steptronic. The little info I've been able to extract from my contacts is it has to do with the designs of the trannies (go figure), but it's hard to believe they couldn't handle 50 extra Nm! Anyone know more about this?

Out of curiosity, what does that particular tune do to gas mileage?

No one has had it long enough to accurately answer this. However I can tell you that I don't expect it to improve my horrific MPG; I drive the car in DS all of the time in quite a bit of stop and go traffic. WTF though, I bought it to enjoy it.

I had a '10 E90 335i m-sport w/ PPK and performance exhaust from the factory. I wish I had the manual trans for that car. Weird thing though is it improved my mileage. Even with all of this it comes no where close to the 335is.

On the freeway the 135i seems to do pretty good... Long trips cruise control at 75-80 will get you like 28mpg, but step on it once or twice to merge and voila you're back down to 25-26mpg even on the freeway with no traffic. LOL
Spirited city driving gets me around 19 (normal about 21), but if I do a sporty 40mile hillclimb run and come back, I practically have to refuel right when I come back down the mountain, averaging a solid 9mpg x-D

$1000-1500 bucks for a 20hp/37tq that retains factory warranty is pretty good so I am considering this. Hopefully my dealership knows what I am asking them for when I say I want the ZMZ code retrofitted to my 135i.

2008 E90 335i step w/ JB-tune: avg ~20mpg spirited (had hpfp / rear diff deal issues)
2009 E92 M3 DCT: avg ~18 mpg drove it civil
2010 E90 335i m-sport step w/ PPK, Perf exhaust: avg. ~23 mpg spirited driving (hpfp issues)
2011 E92 335is DCT: avg 23 mpg civil, 19 mpg spirited

For the price and not having to worry about warranty - the PPK will reduce turbo lag and increase fuel efficiency because you won't have to press the gas as much

I wouldn't worry about the step vs dct issue - I believe the PPK does something to remap the shift points in the step and has the tq converter - it is worth it if you don't want a more aggressive tune

I do admit the exhaust note with the n54 + step + PPK + PE was sweet

So you want us to speculate.
OK, plenty of that in this thread.

Because they can.
I don't see why they have to charge at all.
It's a software patch, for crying out loud. That means the current software isn't extracting all it can from the engine. If it was a safety issue they'd upgrade the software for free. But because it's a performance issue, they want to milk for as long as they can.
I bet it will be free next year.

Mileage and emissions are unchanged, according to the announcement.
