Check my math.....trying to understand a few points.

The 335d when new was eligible for the BMW eco credit which was ~$3500?

Then the new owner was also eligible for the IRS diesel tax credit of ~$900?

So in total the ~53,000 car got roughly ~$4500 taken off placing it in the same cost ballpark as a similar equipped 335i.

Yet from looking on Autotrader.com it seems most used 335ds are priced quite high compared to similar used 335is.

Gut feeling, it seems dealers selling 335ds are basing their depreciation off sticker price (~$53k) rather than off the actual 'take home' price. Thus making it more expensive on the used car market.

Am I correct with this logic?

Diesels have a reputation for long term durability, at least 30% savings on fuel cost/mile, and many enjoy the low end torque that really compares to much larger displacement gasoline engines.

That said, 335d's are relatively rare compared to other types of e90's.

Its possible that the above also contributes to the traditional higher resale value of diesels as well.

When I bought mine in 2010 I was originally looking for a CPO diesel, but the prices were so close that the tax benefits you mention made the new car cheaper. Fast forward to today, I've been pricing VW TDIs and the difference between a new and CPO is only about $1500. So I'd say the diesel does carry a premium on its own, and also holds up as a CPO.

The thing we don't really know yet is how that translates to a high roller. There aren't many 100,000 mile BMW diesels out there yet, but if you want one I might know a guy who's pricing VW TDIs and might cut a deal!

Perhaps I am wrong...but I have a hard time beleiving the 335d can really command a significant premium in the used market over the 335i. The 335d was a niche car and is not one the average BMW seeker pursues. Been watching autotrader over the last 3 months and there really is not much turnover. Many D listings over 90 days old in my area. Most at the tail end of their warranty (40k to 50k miles) and priced in the mid $30s.

Ideally I'm searching for 2010 w sport pack for ~$28k ballpark and under 50k miles.

Mine had a sticker price of 56k. with the $4,500 eco credit and other discounts, (mine was custom ordered and sat on the lot for a few months) My out the door price was like 48k back in 2010. However depreciation should still starts at the MSRP of 56k.

With that said, as other have said, it's hard to find a low mileage diesel, it's hard to find a pre owned diesel because we owners love them and don't want to get rid of them because it is such an amazing vehicle. Also there is short supply and lost of demand so it will hold its value really well.

Good luck searching for one.

There was a rumor that of the e90 335 species, as much as a third were 335d's, at least in 2011.

Overall, however, the total number was probably low compared to all other 3's.

I believe that the Q2 2011 sales figures had the d ahead of the I (335-wise), so this wouldn't shock me at all. They also gained popularity onward the end of their production run (2011 vs 2009) and are currently unavailable new. I would imagine that they will carry a slight premium over the I for some time.

I bought mine in dec 2011 brand new, sticker price $56K paid $45.5K and paid $700 to get it shipped from CA to MA.

I wouldn't sell mine. Maybe when the new M3 comes out I might consider trade-in.

How many came stock with a sports package though? I RARELY ever see sports packaged d's

Soo true I paid almost $43K b4 tax for my 2011 CPO Msport it had 25,000KM (15,000 miles) last August which I felt was a good deal. Considering that the car is so rare to find well equipped, here in Canada. I was hunting for one with the sport package but was lucky to find an Msport with the right colour combo.

I was very patient in my search took me almost 10 mo's and I waited till I found the right one for a price I liked.

Not that i really see many d's

Mine's a 2011 335d M-sport. 40,000 miles currently. Will be on the market at 300,000 miles. Best car ever.
