Go Paleo, eat a Neanderthals diet, cut out bread, rice, pasta, potatoes etc eat meats fish, veggies, fruits and nuts. I've been doing it for a year along with CrossFit, high intensity workouts and haven't looked back tbh. Am no longer bloated, lethargic and have thinned out quiet nicely. Tons of info can be found on tinterweb

I had a knee op (bone drilling!) at the end of May, and since turning 30 ive battled against keeping the weight balanced. i was playing less football, socialising more, eating more, enjoying all the bad stuff. but once I knew Id be on crutches for circa 10 weeks I knew I would be screwed, especially being at home all day and bored. short version is I put on nearly 2 stone in 3 months.

Im reasonably big anyway (6'4" 15.5stone 36" waist) and played football all my life which enabled me to eat what i wanted really, because training and playing I knew I would burn off whatever I ate. unfortunately, football is now a huge no. not unless I want a knee replacement before 35.

so as part of the rehab plan, I needed to 2 stone, if only to lighten the stress on the knee joint, and strengthen up for the longer term, so along with the knee work my physio suggested going to fitness classes (zumba, body attack, LBT, spinning etc) which I initially thought would transform me to a homosexual for some reason.
my other half goes regularly, and she comes back sweating and I just put that down to her being a girl and a bit weedy etc.
But she bet me I couldnt do 2 in a row and maintain the level of intensity set by the instructor - so I went, the first 2 nearly killed me!
i wouldnt say I like them, or enjoy them, but they work. i also havent been anywhere near zumba. but the difference they have made in the short term is vast.

so my advice would be that if you have access to a gym/sport centre, then incorporate a class or two per week (along with mrs palm and her five fingers) maybe some high rep weights and the cross trainers.

5 months on ive just starting running again and have shed 1.5 stone, I feel as fit and more agile than I have for about 5 years, and all without adapting my diet too much. ive learnt to love brown rice and salad/veg with meat, as opposed to chips or some sort of fried concontion.

I was always a 28" waist and weighed around 9 stone up till the age of 30.
However, by the age of 32 I was 11 stone and 32" waist, and by the time I got to 36 I was 13 stone and a 34-36" waist.
Now 38 and at the start of the year was finding some 36" trousers a little close and hit 14 stone 10lbs!! So bought a bike and cut down on grazing during the day. Now down to around 13 stone 11lbs and some 36" trousers are feeling loose again.

Need to get another stone off me, but it is really hard, decided to quit the red wine, well not drink it every night anyway as that is another 500 calories before doing nothing other than climbing into bed. I eat healthily but have started to cut my portion sizes as much as possible. I just think age has a lot to do with it, you have to work much harder just to stay the same.

I posted the following to another forum back in August. unfortunately Sept/Oct have been bad in so much as I weigh exactly what I did then, now. I really need to press on and have another push to get down to the 12 mark (12st 11lb this morning according to the scales).

Bit of a strange topic but I thought I'd share. There's a few health nuts on here and whilst I'm still far far far far from that it's a personal achievement and I've hit a milestone recently.. so yeah really posting it just makes me feel good about myself so why not.

when I was about 12. I had some family shit go down, and then ate. Won't go into it further but I really fucked myself up before realising what I was doing and putting a stop to it. Basically when I was 15 I weighed 17 stones and had size 46" jeans.

I'd lost some weight and got down to a size 40! jeans size when I was 18 which was an achievement. But well actually I was still 16 stone or so... But I was taller and broader with the same overall weight as I'd lost it from my gut a little.

July last year I weighed around 15 and a half STILL. I'd just never lost any more. Well I'd fluctuate between 15 and 15.5 basically.

As such I decided to start a regime and really get fit. The rationale behind this was to start with fitness but also I take my karting and driving quite seriously (Although I don't have the money right now to pursue this as a real venture which is why I've had to sell the track car. Boo... )

I bought a product called a "ki fit". some of you have seen the armband that I *always* carry. I have this on me when I eat, sleep, work out at the gym, and even when I'm getting jiggy LOL! It measures galvanic skin response and a number of other factors to measure within 10% my daily calorie burn. This has given me some real power to know what I was doing to myself with the excessive alcohol consumption (6-9 pints 2 or 3 nights a week) and that no matter how hard I tried at the gym (been a member since Iwas 19) I'd never lose weight this way. The benefit of the product is as well as the burn numbers you can input ALL of your food and see actually what you've consumed versus what you've eaten on a daily / weekly / monthly basis. No hiding from the facts any more...

SO. As I said I started on July 17th. I've taken weight readings roughly every week (Although a bit less often since Feb or so.. ) and I've recently crossed into the normal weight category for BMI and also under 13 stone (Current weight is 12st 11.25 lb)

I go to the gym every morning and just do moderate activity cardio vascular work.. IE cross trainer, treadmill or rower etc. This morning I did exclusively cross trainer and did 7km in 32mins before going off for a jacuzzi and shower. I usually have about 35mins in the gym itself and I leave at 06:30 to get to work for 08:45. Anyway:

I'm now in a 34" jean and plan to get down to a 32 before starting to work more on toning up. So far the goal was to simply lose weight and therefore doing too much muscle work would have just made the numbers depressing. Once I get to 12 dead the goal will be to maintain whilst gaining muscle. That said I don't ever want to go much above 12 again because for karting 12 is about the ideal. 12 and a half at the very most. No desire to become mr muscles thoughl.

I've calculated my total % weight loss and therefore BMI decrease...

% Weight loss TD
14.66
BMI Difference TD
3.81

(You can tell I work in IT from my need to quantify EVERYTHING... )

So... Maybe not of any interest to anyone else but it makes me happy that I've lost now just under 3 stones in 1 year and also that my BMI no longer gets me a funny look whenever I go GP or etc. The milestone was the number 12 being at the beginning of my weight. The next one (close) will be sub 80kg and then the final one I'm really aiming for will be a 20kg loss in total since starting. Itd be nice to have the latter before Christmas and should be easy enough if I don't go off the rails.

Hopefully by next year I'm already long since at my goal and no one has to bring this topic up and say "look mega you fat bastard" lol...

Cheers

Well done Dave,

I hope when you guys see me in Dec you'll notice a difference. I'll hopefully be around 100kg then and I'm aiming for 90-95 before I begin some building and will probably finish up at 95-100 if all goes well.

We just eat far too many carbs in general these days. Cut back on the carbs and eat more protein.

Here's a very simple way to work out a decent weight loss food intake. Get your weight in pounds and times that by 12...this is how many calories you should be eating. Split those calories down in to 40% protein, 30% carbs and 30% fats. Will put you on the right track and give you a decent balanced diet.

Any exercise will be good, as long as you're expending more calories than you consume.

Exercise and diet, but mainly diet for most people. You only need to check out people's shopping trolleys to see how shocking it can be
