Luxury cars lose their value quickly. Manuals lose their value quickly. Convertibles lose their value quickly. Luxury cars that are out of warranty lose their value rapidly. That's just the way things are.

I shopped for an E9x for about a month and I found that basically all 135i-335i-535i models were roughly the same price; between 23-26k for 07-08's with an average amount of miles and damage etc. So a 135i with a sticker price of about 37k is now worth about as much as a 335i convertible with a 60k sticker price.

I paid about 24k for my 07 335i with 65k miles and in excellent condition and I think I probably overpaid about a grand because I was pressed for time and it was the only reasonable choice for me within 1000 miles; I went for it.

So yea, sell the car asap. Get your son a manual transmission car that is really safe and makes him happy.

Sell it because there is no way a 16 year old's first car should be a high performance luxury car. Get him a 1997 Ford Escort that barely runs and let him bang up that first before going bigger and better.

Yes and gx470 too...

It's just the extra pain of having a 3rd auto that I don't really need (more importantly, will need to work out space too) but emotionally, I do. Can find a way to keep it if it won't cause a lot of inconvenience...hence question regarding reliability input from the experts

Great input...every word is true...couldn't agree more. Makes me think about it more. I guess I'll keep it on the market for a month or 2 and see if I could get my minimum that I can live with...will set the threshold and won't go beyond it. Can always use it as an additional car as a backup to the p-car...

Ok, I agree with you. I recall when I was in college and wanted prelude ...but dad got civic sedan instead ...

I don't get it. What's the intended use of that car if you keep it ?

If you talk about money, you either have the need for that car, or you sell it. You don't keep it because it has too low a resale value for your taste, that's not gonna improve and just deepens your loss. If you sale it a market value (low to your taste), you still recoup the entire value that has not been lost yet, next year that same car will trade in the $15k , and soon enough it will have marginal value.

so whats the problem here?....some of life's toughest choices are not often easy to come by. We ponder them, deliberate over them, stress over them, and in the end, we must decide one way or another....and never without consequences!

Yes, life's tougher questions...the argyles and Rachel Comeys or the Beams embroidered and Zenieches?

...twill or tweed?....

My Ermanno Scervino ensemble or my Day-Glo Ferragamo?

decisions, decisions...the Bimmer today or the Porsche?...hmmmm

yup a real tough one!....

It's resale value has dropped like a rock! I paid almost $60K in Nov 2006 (all options other than adaptive cruise control...loaded car with clear bra etc)...now it's value is hardly $26K! folks showing interest in this car have essentially been wasting my time...I've my new car coming (Porsche 911 "991" 4S) in about a month-which I plan to use as a daily driver!

I need help with the decision whether or not its wise to sell this car or rather keep it? I'm ok with regular service and maintenance costs but not sure if there's going to be a big ticket item related to reliability of this car that's really going to hurt me...anything over $3K for example in next 5-10 yrs? If I keep it, I'd keep it as a backup car, would drive it even less (only got 39K miles in over 6 yrs!!) and probably give it to my son when he turns 16 in 5 yrs.

I do have emotional attachment with it and throwing it in exchange for pennies is hurtful

Help!
It's impossible to know what "could" go wrong with a car over a 5 or 10 year period.

Giving this kind of vehicle to a 16 year old is asking for a wreck.

Sell it now while it's got some value. New cars almost always depreciate, especially expensive cars. Your Porsche will also depreciate. Retaining nearly 50% of it's value after 6 years isn't half bad, sounds like it's time to swallow the lump in your throat and move on.

Do what makes you happy, but my two cents....

If you are going to have another car that will be a daily driver (especially one that's nicer than your bmw), then I say, sell the bmw.

As others have pointed out,
a.the bmw will continue to depreciate

b. and, you're going to need some cash to buy tires for that Porsche in a couple years. Or, for something else. Why keep money tied up in a car that's not a DD?

c. Oh yes and you will continue to pay auto insurance and registration on the second car.

It's hard to let go of a car you like, that you know is in great condition...but you kind of made that decision when you decided to commit to a new purchase.
