So far I find my '09 pretty quiet. A couple of times I was initially distracted by an odd noise/rattle. But I found that generally the noise was coming from something I was carrying in the car - my cell phone, some package I picked up at a store, etc. Compared to my old Saab, this car is so quiet that I can actually hear noises from stuff that is carried in the car.

So I took my car in yesterday for this issue as well as a few others. I went for a drive with the mechanic and the car was dead silent inside the whole time! Even when going over speed bumps!!! Go figure...

Try to clean with pure alcohol or brake cleaner fluid(alcohol) your door seal's and also the places where they hit on a body... if not help .. install (teflon) tape to body where door's highest seal hit .. tape has to be like about 3 meter's long on each side of the car... problem in the door seal's is that they swet silicone...and in these seals should not be used any lubricant!!..

Get some 1/4 or 5/16 inch vacuum tubing from the hardware store, $1.20 total. Jam it with a flathead screwdriver in the crease between the rear window and the rear deck. Really get it in there as far as you can using the flathead. PROBLEM SOLVED! No noise in 6 months or so now.

crackling sound from rear shelf
I have a 2010 328. noticed crackling sound in cold coming from rear shelf. got it fixed twice at dealership - they refitted the shelf and then put a felt tape. the sound has become a lot worse. very irritating crackling sound which lasts through out my commute in cold weather. have decided never to buy a bmw again.

Yes, a pretty poor design and materials engineering decision and it's not the only one inside these cars. BUT, it's a pretty simple fix; the felt just needs to go on the right spots. Not a peep out of mine since I fixed it a few years ago. However, I bought my 3er used so I'm not nearly as sore about having to correct a few things about it.

just want to add that I did follow one of the threads on how to get to the plastic piece and take it off. It took me about 2 hours to do it I put some tape on the bottom and now the car is completely silent from the back. Just take your time when you are taking the stuff out dont force anything. Good luck.

My car did this ever since new too. Annoying as shiet.
Also like someone mentioned get some rubber lube for the door seals as well as the rubber trim that holds the window in place. Those also creak when they dry out. Alan

I went with the vacuum tubing solution. A little ghetto, but it beats a trip to the dealer just to fix that problem. Cheap, quick, and completely solved the problem.

I've got the same problem it started when it got cold out but now that its warmed up the problem hasn't gone away. I took it to my local dealer, they asked to keep it for an extra day so the regional rep could take a look at it. Whatever they did it must have been extensive because when I tried to pick it up they said the interior was completely disassembled and they were going to need another day. BTW, the loaner the dealer gave me had the same problem. When they returned it they informed me that they had "adjusted" the package tray and they hoped for the best. The problem remains.
I'm going to try the vacuum tube thing tomorrow. |

I've had rattles which seemed like interior (rear) rattles... drove me nuts.
Turned out that my rear left wheel arch and rear left fender supporting bolt were missing (1 bolt each). Once fixed, problem solved! |

It's definitely the window seals. If I crack my windows the sound is immediately eliminated. What can you put on those seals that wont grease up the window?

Old thread but I have to give credit to the person who mentioned the vacuum tube solution. I had all types of creaks pops and rattles coming from the rear shelf on my 07 E92. I used a 4’ roll of windshield washer tubing 7/64” and shoved it into the area where the plastic part of the rear shelf contacted the base of the rear window. I used a screwdriver to push it in along the entire length of the window ......now it’s silent.
