I had an interesting visit to my Dealer today .. I went for an alignment, and hit them with my new take on the Tick,Tick,Ticking that they claimed months ago was normal.

I sat with my SA, and asked him to hear me out. I explained in great painful detail everything I had read on here, and just how much I knew about what the real issue here was. After me rambling for 10-15 minutes, he looked at me and said there is a bleeding process they can do, to eliminate the ticking issue. (Geesh, all of a sudden he knows about the issue?)

That allowed me to again ramble about what I knew about the bleeding process, and how that was generally a temporary stop gap, until the noise comes back again ... However I understand "process", so I allowed them to "bleed" the car today while it was in.

After all was said and done, and they were shocked that I knew so much, he agreed without any fight to open a PUMA case for me on the issue ... He said he will get back to me and let me know the status, as soon as he knows more.

So all in all, I got as far as getting them to open a PUMA case ... Now I have no idea what will happen. I'm sure that my car is either ticking again now, or will tomorrow, at which point I will call him immediately to make him aware ... and to rub it in a little, I will also email him an MP3 of it (not that it will help, but so he knows I'm serious if he didnt understand that already)

Now the waiting game.

What might happen next? Anyone hazard a guess ?

If they opened up a PUMA case, then they will most likely go with the cylinder head replacement.

BMW is well aware of this issue and should approve the case id fairly quick. When I went the dealer opened the PUMA case and ordered the part 30 mins after Now getting the part may take some time. If there is none in stock in Canada they will have to get it from Germany which is about a weeks wait.

I was told by me dealer that the ticking is normal and that the opening of the PuMA case
will result in the regional BMW engineer to go to the dealer, hear the car, tell me the same
thing (that this is normal) and that nothing will happen. I know very well this isn't normal
simply because my car sounds like a diesel when you lift up the hood but I'm getting tired
of chasing this and end up fighting through more people

I'll give this one more try and ask them to open a PuMA case as soon as I am back
from my summer holidays and see what happens.

You should NOT hear any ticking under the hood if you have had this replaced. Mine initially ONLY ticked if you popped the hood and after replacement there is no ticking. You got a bum job.

The 09's do have the new cylinder head already in place. You can confirm on realoem.com that they come with the updated cylinder head so these do not have the problem.

Mine is problem free after a month and running stronger than the day I brought it home from the dealer

I haven't had a new cylinder head yet. Just the bleed procedure done so far.
If when I get back from my holidays the dealer doesn't open a PuMA or the
PuMA is rejected I don't know how I will proceed. I will probably find another
dealer who can assess my car and the noise and hope for the best. If I knew
for sure a dealer out there was going to do the replacement for me, I would
just drive to it no matter how far it was. I just know my car sounds like a
diesel and that's not normal. But we'll see...

PUMA will be based on VIN# , so might be tough after 1 try has been made ?

Dont let down on your first PUMA case, otherwise it will be more of an uphill battle than the first !

I believe they follow a procedure to bleed the car a couple of times (in my case anyways) before they file the PUMA case. It was the 3rd time going to the dealer for me then they opened the PUMA case. You're on the right track so just stick with it. Just take note of everything that you do from going to the dealer, note the dates, and any calls you make to your SA and BMWNA. You shouldn't even have to ask your SA to open a PUMA case for you.

Brought in my car Sat. with a video on my cell of the ticking. Set up a Puma case and did a cylinder head replace. Picking it up later today . Good service at Valencia BMW of CA. Interesting note though, my SA said that Puma or whomever decides if the car needs a complete replacement or partial.

Report back later on the issue. Hope this is the end of it.

Hey guys. i had the cylinder head replaced on my 06 325i but had the car back at the dealer after two days im getting a very loud clanking noise coming from the engine. The dealer told me that everything checked out with the cylinder head change and all was ok, but they are having a very hard time getting to the source of the noise maybe somone here can chime in on what the heck that noise is and what is cousing it. The car sound like a diesel.

It's the cylinder head again in my opinion based on your description. If they put the new
improved head, then they didn't do it right. Time for a new PuMA.

why not every bmw owner with the ticking sound sign a letter and do a formal complain to BMW or whoever can take this to further action?

I agree, and BMW should extend the powertrain warranty to anyone that has to go through this nonsense.

Or just extend it for the N52. Mine doesn't tick, but if it starts ticking at mile 50,001, I'll be pissed as hell.

Thumbs down Ticking--

I support circulating a letter to BMW that their tactics on this issue render the company unreliable. They have one from me already.

The TSB only discusses bleeding. Why not go on to state that after a bleed, if the tick remains, a new head is due the customer? This problem warrants BMW issuing a comprehensive recall for 2006-2008, in my opinion. Instead they are playing games with each and every three series owner.

BMW playing this game with its customers is beyond comprehension. So, my advice is everyone you know should go in and complain of ticking. If they fail to repair and replace the head sue under the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act. Enough is enough.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuson-Moss_Warranty_Act

Quoting from above "... consumers may seek redress in the courts for alleged violations of the Magnuson-Moss Act. A consumer who has been injured by the noncompliance of a supplier may bring an action in state court if the amount in controversy is between $25 and $50,000, or a class action in state court if the number of class plaintiffs is less than 100. If the jurisdictional amount, or number of plaintiffs, exceed these limits, such an action may be brought in federal district court.[5] Moreover, one of the key aids to the effectiveness of the Act is that a prevailing plaintiff may recover reasonable costs of suit, including attorney fees.[6]"

Is this really what BMW needs / wants? I say stop playing games and fix defective BMW 3 Series!

would be interesting to obtain info from BMW as to how many PUMA's have been submitted related to ticking/head replacement. ie within how many std deviations with respect to total N52's produced.
