Front dash speaker is blown... what to do?

BMW wants $400 to fix.... ehhh...... NO thank you.

Is this a simple "bring it to the local car stereo guy" and he can simply unhook that speaker? I don't think it is a DIY job. The vibration is driving me CRAZY!!!

The metal grille was rattling in my car, popped it up in 30 seconds with a credit card and some fingernail grease so i could fix it. The speaker is exposed. You can unscrew it, and although i didn't, there is probably a connector to easily disconnect the speaker.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...27&hg=65&fg=20 is the replacement, hopefully the link works. $86 ain't bad.

You might need a stubby screwdriver.

Hopefully it is the speaker and not the amplifier channel burnt out.

Same happened to mine. I ordered BSW's for like $15 extra then OEM. Its a super easy DIY. I used a butter knife to gently pull off the trim, stubby phillips screwdriver and just pull the plug out. Was much better than the rattle until my BSW came. Bullshit $400. Hardest part was trying to see the screws to unscrew. Just use the reflection on the windshield, you'll get it.

My problem is trying to get the mesh grill out of the dash? I've tried and the damn thing will not budge. I don't want to break it... any ideas???

No, use a butter knife, or some flat hard plastic something to wedge it starting with the front( well, the edge facing you). Once get enough space, you can use your finger to firmly pull upwards. Don't be afraid to use a little but of force.

This must be the 5th thread I have seen on blown center speakers.... Whatever happened to searching?

Anyway, my advice would be to look for another BMW OEM mid AND an L7 tweeter. Install the tweeter inside the left airduct next to the center speaker (it snaps right into the back of the midrange). Then, sit back and enjoy a almost perfect center image, better stage height, and more clarity.

Edit: You can even "swipe" a tweeter from the rear deck, I swear you will not hear a difference, especially if you fade everything to the front a bit - the way it should be done to get a good front stage.

L7 tweeter with in-line crossover and plug-in connector

Tweeter plugs right into midrange

Tweeter mounted using high-tech bracket made from tin cookie box

Gorilla glue is awesome

I just ordered the BMW Individual Audio coaxial dash speaker from Tischer, since I heard that adding a tweeter up there really makes the system come alive.

That speaker is 4ohm! You want 2ohm. It'll probably be OK, but not ideal.
