Those of you who have had your turbos replaced with the new revision turbos, do you notice a somewhat minor wastegate rattle/grinding under moderate throttle, audible during AT upshifts around 3000 rpm or so? Mine do it, and it's espcially audible after a cold start for the first several 1 > 2 and 2 > 3 upshifts.

Dealership insists this is "normal" and just a consequence of the new turbo's wastegate design and they all do it. I'm not so sure. It's enough to bother me, even if it is only audible under certain conditions and with the windows down.

I'm guessing this is only for people who kept their cars stock correct? Anyone have any luck getting these replaced after going into the dealer FBO?

I have this EXACT same noise, except I also get this really bad rattling noise too.

It only happens at cold start, once it warms up both sounds go away.

I just took it to the BMW dealership and showed the SA the noise, he said it sounds like that's it but they have to check it out first, if the wastegate is indeed the problem than he confirmed that they would replace both turbos under the extended 8 year/82k mile warranty.

The funny thing is I just found out about this extended warranty, and by the time I drove it to the dealership I had 81990 miles! talk about cutting it close...

As soon as the dealer lets me know I'll let the forum know what happened.

It didn't end well for me. They offered to measure the turbos on my dollar. They quoted me $7k to remove them and measure. If they were out of spec, the warranty would cover. But that's too much of a gamble that I can take right now. Much better off getting a warranty and replacing them at 90k.

SEVEN. THOUSAND. DOLLARS.

To remove and measure? So we're talking SEVEN. THOUSAND. DOLLARS. in labor?????

EDIT: Wait, I see, they want you on the hook for a full turbo replacement.

For that kind of money I'd get upgraded turbos, have them installed elsewhere, and pocket the probably $1k - $2k difference.

I'm the second owner of an '07 335 e92 with 36,800 miles. I thought it might be flywheel rattle because I didn't know the waste gates would rattle like that in vacuum in neutral.

Took it to Bob Smith BMW in Calabasas, CA for an oil change. Asked them to listen for a noise. Car came back and the SA told me the techs said it was normal. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Well, last weekend, I looked up the noise on YouTube. It was exactly the sound I heard. Took it to Center BMW on advice of a friend. SA gives the tech my keys. Tech gets in my car, turns it on, revs the car and says, "Yup, wastegate rattle." Took all of 20 seconds.

So the techs at Bob Smith are either lazy or incompetent or both.

Anywho, I'll get my car back Monday with two new turbos and about 3 months left on the warranty

Care to share the tech/advisor? I'm in LA and around 78k, would love to talk to someone that can hear the issue as well.

Did you have any aftermarket parts when you brought it in?

Got new turbos last week on 2009 335. Car seems faster....maybe its because I was driving a 4 banger while it was in the shop. Is there at all any power increase with the new turbos?
