DC Owners: Do you have pay sales tax when taking over a lease?
Any experience here? There are a couple very tasty Z4 lease take over deals on this forum and I'm craving a vert for the spring/summer But if I have to pay 6% sales tax on $50k car to keep just for 15 months, those become no deals. My gut tells me lease take over is treated like a sale...

Isn't sales tax rolled into monthly payment? So you're not paying it up front...
Good thing I bought my car in NH tax-free

It took a lot of googling but I think I figured it out: You do pay sales tax in form of usage tax. It's 10% of your monthly payment. And since it's a usage tax and not a sales tax, it doesn't make a difference whether you're the original lessee or a pass-down.
In the neighboring states of VA and MD, you guys get to pay the full amount of sales tax when you assume a lease |
