Am I mad or just old?

On the verge of buying this machine to use as a motorway luxury barge.....
1995(M) X300 XJ6 3.2 Sport. Full History, 'private' plate (ok not very private), loads and loads of receipts, bills, old MOTs, all service history and 77,000 miles. I have done a lot of research, this model is one of the most highly regarded Jags, first with the Ford influence. The straight six engine is apparantly fairly bullet proof so is the auto box. Economy is a reasonable 31mpg combined (if I am delicate with my right foot!). VED is just £185 (pre 2001 car)

So for £2000 (about 1 month depreciation in my old 335d), I get a black Jag in lovely condition, oatmeal leather and beautiful XKR 18" alloys. First stop would be a full service at a local independent, then hopefully a couple of years trouble free motorway cruising. I am 43 so am probably just about old enough!

When the time comes to shift it on the depreciation will be peanuts.......

so, am I mad?

I have to say though, even if worse came to worse and it died completely after a year I could sell it for £500 for spares and still be better off than I would have been buying a that 05 plate passat I nearly bought the other week. I seriously did a fair bit of research and the straight 6 cyl engine is supposed to be fine. Rust - show me a 13 year old car that hasn't got at least a little bit! This car hasn't got any to speak of.

If the choice is cruising up and down the M6 in this or a peugeot diesel, I know where I would rather be.

Oh yes, and Paul you must be right....old and mad!

But £2000

Think about your family.

This ancient Jag is a deathtrap compared to a newer car.. Have an accident on your own or with your family and it wont be good.

Get a newer car.

Carlos..... haven't yet parted with my hard earned cash........ but interesting to see everyones response....

For the record... honestjohn's review...

What's Good
300 Series gained an impressive reputation for reliability both on the fleets and in private hands. Better even than Mercedes or BMW. Well liked by owners. 216 bhp 3.2 litre straight six; 245 bhp 4.0 straight six; 322 bhp 4.0 litre supercharged straight six. 5-speed manual or 'J-change' 4-speed ZF automatic. XJR has much stronger, better Mercedes 600 autobox. Standard lenght 16' 4" long by 6' 7" wide and weighing from 1,880kg. Long wheelbase 16' 10" long. Three-year 60,000-mile warranty. Better to buy a lat one of these than an early V8. Extremely Low 1 out of 9 point death rate from accidents in this model. XJ6 1995-1997 rated average for brekadowns, problems and faults in 2003 Which survey. By 2005 had sunk to £2,000 - £4,000.

It actually scores extremely well on safety for the occupants... Suspect there is quite a bit of engrained thinking about Jags....

Take it for a spin

I've previously owned a few Jaguars (my Father has always had a Jag, from MK2 S through all manner of XJs - and still sells them on, good ones go quickly).

The way they ride on the road will make any BMW with runflats look like a clumsy, crashing lump.

And NOBODY cuts you up, instead deferring to you. Quite uncanny.

EDIT : Check for Nikasil bore wear issues on earlier models.

I don't speak of the rust on my 13 year old truck. I'm hoping if I ignore it long enough it will go away; kinda like teeth. Actually I'm only hoping the truck doesn't fall apart for six more months.

BTW, that's a monstrous engine! Any idea the weight to horsepower?

Dave, glad you said it straight.. I tried to provide evidence that Carlos was bullshitting, maybe I am too polite

Its 1880kg and 216bhp, not earth shattering performance, but I don't want/need that

I had an XJ of about that year for 2 months as a loan car as I waited for my new S-Type.

Just check out the build date and see if it has a problem with the Nikasil piston liners.

They are just a feel good car. Comfy, refined and dignified. Coming out to a cold and wet car park after a hard day was a delight - woofling off home cacooned from the world in my own private gentlemans club. Nobody cutting you up, rather waving you out.

Choose carefully and you will be smiling wryly. As you said it will always sell. We have several of them back in and out a few times now. All the owners happy. When the alternative is a Ford/Vauxhall/VW I know what I would rather have.

You can leave the chipping, Vmax and 1/4 mile willy-waving, MAX Power burnouts at MacDonalds and sliding about over the grass to tubes that drive BMWs (and conform perfectly to the stereotype).

I also had a new XJ and XKR (Air suspension) for a few weeks and just more of the same just bigger/taller. I prefer the timeless class of the model you are looking at.

Electrically they can/are a nightmare, so if you go for it, and by the sound of things you will, check that everything works, as it should do, and go for an extremelly long test drive - couple of hours or so.

Again, only my own personal opinion, but I think not a bad one as Ive been in the motor trade around 20 yrs, would be to find a five series or similar.

Enjoy, whatever descision you make.

Nothing to do with differing points of view. Just your unfounded, unsubstantiated BULLSHIT. FACT.

Peter,

I think the car looks brilliant. Big petrol engined cars are indecently cheap. All I would say is that before you plump for a £2k - and end up in a world of oily tinkering - check out what you could get for £15K.

For example:

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk..._mileage=40000

Or even better:

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk..._mileage=40000

Quite tempted to look at the last one myself.
