New clutch after 3 weeks... advice needed!

As some of u may have read on my other posts, i recently got the car i dreamed off - a 996 turbo.

Anyway.... prior to purchase i did a pre inspection check as advised on the forum and they found a few bits inc a broken turbo actuator.

Took the car back to the specialist today to get a few bits done that the dealer agreed (some missing bolts). On the way there clutch started to slip, and specialist confirmed that clutch is on the way out!!

They said that when they road tested car with 1 actuator working, clutch was fine. But when dealer fixed other one the clutch couldn't handle the power of the car. I also called another specialist in case this one was fobbing me off, and they confirmed that this was very likely and the clutch issue would only have presented itself when both turbos were working.

So now my issue is i have a car which needs a new clutch 3 weeks after buying it- at a cost of £1300! Car has a 12 month RAC warranty on it -but doubt clutch will be covered.

Do i have any recourse to the dealer (independent luxury car dealer)? Had the dealer fixed the car at the specialist they would have spotted the clutch slippage on the road test.

Also i paid £2k deposit on my amex - so thinking of seeing is the section 75 route is open to me.

Any advice gratefully received before i call dealer tomorrow±±

Bugger...

Speak to the dealer, stay calm and professional. Ask them how they are going to rectify it - don't make demands, don't threaten anything.

Give them a chance to solve it. Sale of goods act should have you covered..

Cool, but the first thing I would do is just take it back to where you got it from as Phil said... Give them a chance to sort it out...

Best of luck, but I worry for you.

A clutch is a wear and tear part. At time of sale the clutch was functioning and the dealer probably didn't know it was on its last legs either.

It's still an 11 year old car so clutches failing isn't an uncommon wear and tear issue.

Hopefully the warranty covers you or the garage does have strong customer care. Otherwise you're in for a fight.

Yep i think its a long shot.... but key is a car shouldn't need £1k of repairs within 3 weeks of purchase.

Would suggest its not fit for purpose.

It was fit for purpose when you bought it.

You could have taken it to a carpark and spent 2 hours dropping the clutch, doughnutting it etc etc.

Technically they might do good will, especially to avoid a lengthy dispute and I assume their being named on the internet everywhere you can think of.

Bu you don't really have any legal precedent to help you I'd say..

Don't get me wrong, best of luck getting something back from them! But just don't expect it...

You may struggle so be prepared to compromise if they can cover a % of the cost out of good will.

That the thing - the car wasnt fit for purpose when i bought it as it had a slipping clutch then - i just didnt know it as i never drove the car like it should be to find out (cos i was scared!!)

Anyway... called dealer earlier - he is going to come back to me tomorrow.

Will update when i hear back.

FYI - new clutch is between £1320 and £1650 after ringing round various specialists ... porsche want £2200!

This is why

This is why people are scared of old exotics and why they depreciate so rapidly down to a certain point. The price of the car goes down tremendously but repair and running costs remain stable at the same level then gradually increase.

Its the price you pay. If this is the only serious problem you have, I wouldn't think that's such a high price for running a car like a 911 Turbo

I had a Z4M which cost me the best part of a grand to sort out an emissions sensor problem. But in the end the car cost me £3K including the repair for 2 years of M cabriolet motoring.....

Repairs are tough luck, but at least you're not paying massive depreciation on top.

Steve,

Very much so.. this car was £102k new... so bills will be large.

Looking at the original price - the exhaust is 1.5% of this which is pretty reasonable really.

Everyone on the porsche forums say to budget £3k a yr for repairs inc servicing.

3K a year for servicing, From some old posts on here Peter G, Oli , and some one else who went Pork all said they are expensive to run but massive fun and bought right the depreciation was minimal , Just so so annoying when things go wrong.

I would think the dealer has some responsibility , how many miles has it covered since you collected the car, I read your first posts about buying the turbo its something I have always thought id like to do but spoke with the above guys including Scott who bought a new 911 and ran it for 18 months from new and lost 20k plus or over a k per month it scares me shitless and this just reminds me to say NO ! lovely cars just expensive fun.

Good luck and I hope you get it sorted to your satisfaction.

Yep... I'm budgetting £3k a yr to run it as you said

From what I'm reading people are predicting the car to have a bump in prices as people realise how good it is for the money.

Just this month in Evo it's saying the same thing - that if maintained properly should keep its price.

Awesome piece of kit when its up and running

I thought I heard someone mention my name! I loved my Porka and will have another one day, if it's an everyday car though I will have an OPC warranty, if it's a garage queen I won't bother! They are not depreciation proof though, especially if bought at the OPC premium but they are loads of fun.

Sorry to hear of the 996 TT issues RCUK, hope you get the clutch sorted by the supplying dealer.

Nothing to report sadly... lawyers are looking at it, and im trying to get the specialist who confirmed the issue and did the PPI to put this in writing, tho they seem to be a bit slow on it.

Chased them today, and will chase lawyers and specialist tomorrow as its dragged on a while now.

I want to know if i can have the repair carried out and then reclaim the monies, or whether this will prejudice my claim in anyway.
