Question Handling, 2008 E90 335i Sedan vrs 2012 E92 335i Coupe

We now own a 2008 335i sedan and a 2012 335i Coupe.

Both have identical, brand new, wheels and tires. Both have the sport package.

I was expecting a very similar ride in both. Nope, the coupe seems much sharper and more immediate in steering response. Sneeze and you change lanes.

Have others had this experience or should I start looking for something wrong with the sedan? As far as I know the sedan is fine. She was just aligned when she got new wheels and tires.

What do you guys think? They are both E90's, same general size and weight ....

Appreciate any insight/experience you might have,

Regards,

CraigB

How many miles are on the 2008? Suspension parts do wear over time so it could be the shocks are getting old and the 2012 has brand new parts.

47 on the Coupe. 80K on the sedan.

The sedan is as perfectly maintained as I can manage, bit of a fanatic. The suspension seems fine ... I recently replaced a tie rod and the suspension passed BMW inspection otherwise.

Thanks for the info,

what are the set ups? Are they both RWD or AWD? Are they spot/mport/base?

Suspension plays the big role.
There is ofcourse some wear & tear over the time with so many miles.

I had a Ford and after around 50k miles, it felt little off the ground, changed the entire suspension and it felt like a new car.

Both are RWD, sport base (ie, 335i) , with the sport package. Ought to be identical as far as I know.

One theory advanced is that the steering wheel on the Coupe is smaller in diameter and thicker in 'grip'. Wife owns the sedan and confirms the Coupe is much "twitchier" than her car.

I am also thinking maybe the alignment is messed up on the Coupe. Its new but that means nothing. The coupe feels like its balanced on a knife edge and wants to dart off in some direction given a slight steering input.

However, it does track straight with hands off the wheel.

Make sure they didn't put run flats on the coupe, that would defiantly make this difference.

Both cars are running the same runflats, PS2's I think.

Problem Solved

I hate to bump my (older) thread but the problem solution might be useful to other folks in the same fix.

After a bit of work by the dealership the problem is solved.

The suspension/alignment was spot on, no problems there.

It turned out the brand new PS2 run flats were defective from the factory.

BMW replaced them under warranty (after going a few rounds with Michelin) and the car is solid and stable on the road. Amazing difference in feel.

I think they simply exhausted every other possibility in minute detail.

Apparently, they had to jump through a few hoops to satisfy the tire manufacturer the problem was theirs and not BMW's. They sent new tires to the dealership overnight.

The long and short of it is that it worked. Changed tires to identical new ones and the problem vanished.

The shop foreman told me he had seen this issue (rarely) in the past.

Amen, I couldn't agree more.

When these wear out I am switching to standard tires and not looking back.

Hey, I have an excuse to wear out tires !

Life is good.
