Can Nav be turned completely off?

Is it possible to turn the Nav completely off, such that the DVD drive is not continually reading the disc? I can hear the drive reading my maps disc all the time, even when I turn the assistance window off and am not using the Nav or viewing the map...

So there's no OFF button? BMW intended for that drive to spin continuously for years?

Seems really dumb. This is my first BMW; hope there's not much more of that level of stupidity hidden in this car.

OP has an '08. The pre LCI map disk loads in the head unit under the climate controls.

Very much so. The drive was probably silent when new, but now it is audible. I thought I had a problem with my stereo until I figured out where the whirs/buzzes/beeps are coming from.
