USB for CIC Retrofit - Really necessary?

Hi
Trying to weigh up options for buying the USB cable and usb port for a CIC retrofit. Its coming to around 60gbp and im not convinced its worth it.
What is the USB for a CIC actually used for?

An alternative could be a cheap version from China but not sure if itll work or just give errors and problems:

to be fair that link looks like just a SWITCH .. not a usb PORT

I would get clarification before purchasing that.

Do you mean the port that goes in the arm rest or the glove box?

The glove box usb is only for importing/backing up music or updating maps.

I've asked the seller to confirm if it's a switch or USB port. I'm hoping its a port.

What does the arm rest usb do that the glove box one doesn't?

The seller also has this one:

But i already have a AUX port in my arm rest so not sure i would want to rerun a new cable. Unless of course i can use my existing AUX cable, run the new USB cable and then connect the UUSB/AUX adaptor in this picture.

What do you reckon?

The armrest one is what you can connect your iPod or USB stick into so that you can play music.

The Glovebox one is for uploading map updates or importing/backing up music on the CIC hard drive.

For the USB socket to work in the armrest..... you will need a combox! OP Have you done any research?

The USB in the glovebox is only used to update maps or load music onto the HDD! It is not needed - I have never used it!

Is it possible to use the oem usb cable from the cic unit, run it through the centre console and attach it to a usb/aux port?

Is the usb/aux post connectors the same as if you were running the aux and USB ports seperately?

The reason I ask is because I was thinking of replacing my aux only port in the arm rest with the usb/aux port by using the existing aux cable and just running a new usb. I figured the usb cable for uploading maps and music would be easier from the arm test than placing a usb in the glove box.

So it seems the usb cable which is used for the glove box usb is not long enough to get to the opening in the arm rest.
Is there a usb extension lead to extend the cable to go into the usb/aux port?
