My Diy Wheel Bearing Install Has Left Me With Another Problem!!!

So after I had some help installing a new rear wheel bearing on my 07' 328xi the proverbial ABS, brake, & 4x4 lghts all came on. If I remember correctly, these lights came on immediately when the car was started which I am hoping means the bearing was not put in backwards. I did much research including having the dealer run the diagnostic which came back as a bad wheel speed sensor. I found it hard to believe that some how it was damaged during the bearing install because the sensor removal/install seemed so simplistic (just a hex bolt and the sensor slides into the opening).... I did remove again and cleaned just as precaution but to no avail. I got the part & hope to install the new sensor today.

Has anyone had this happen to them after a bearing install? Could we have messed something up with the axle or created another problem elsewhere triggering the sensor??? I am skeptical replacing the sensor will resolve my issue but remain hopeful. I feel like I maybe chasing the issue...

You put the bearing in backwards. It can be installed either way, however there is only one correct way. There is a magnetic pickup inside of the bearing only on one side. It will set wheel speed sensor faults because the sensor cannot pick up the trigger wheel due to it being in backwards. Unfortunately you will be installing another bearing.

in my case, i had to replace a front hub & wheel assembly earlier this year and the DSC, ABS, DTC lights went off after i drove around outside the garage for a little bit. maybe less than a tenth of a mile. it's like it has to recalibrate itself.

+1. Same thing happened to me. 2nd time is much easier as the bearing is not going to be stuck as much.

I am trying to figure out the exact same thing.

Replaced the driver side- abs/dcs/cruise control all kuput. I figured the abs sens was bad because I had to give it a pretty good whack to get it off the hub. No biggie I figure.

Drove the car for a day and determined the driver side was just as bad. Didn't have the time or energy to do it so I had my mechanic do the job. Guess what- The speedo stopped working. OK, figured both ABS senors were bad, got two new ones from bmw, put on the car and the all the problems still exist no abs/tc/speedo.

So in my mind the only thing left is that both the one I put in and the one my mechanic put in went in backwards. One side is orange and one is black, I assumed that the black side was the side with the magnet or whatever the abs sensor communicates with.

Fucking frustrating.

The bearing has one side that is black. I think that side is mounted inward. Don't hold me to that as I don't have the Bentley in front of me .

Thank you guys for the all the input.... I found a mechanic that says he will try to salvage the new bearing I put in and switch it around. He also mentioned that since we did not have the bearing pressed in it may not be "snug" enough which is tripping the sensor.

Either way hopefully this will resolve all issues... I will post the results after I get it done for those of you experiencing the same.

Thats possible to, if you didnt press it in all the way the sensor will not pick it up.

If you didnt press the bearing in, how did you get it in?

I did both of my front wheel bearings and I believe the sensors would be easily damaged if you are not careful.

Try a battery reset...unplug battery for a little bit?

I had the same problem when I did my wheel bearing. It was the ABS speed sensor for me. they are VERY VERY delicate and are commonly damaged during wheel bearing jobs, even if you did remove it you may have shocked it from banging in/out the wheel bearing.

Hi, how did the lights come on - randomly during a drive, or when starting up?

I have had the ABS/DSC/speedo blank fault around 3 times - always when cruising on motorway after an hour of driving in the wet. I have also had the battery warning light a couple of times on separate occasions. Restarting the car makes it dissappear and it doesn't return.

From what I read a weak battery might be causing this, but not sure due to it occuring after a period of driving....

The link to very wet weather may also suggest a sensor issue, but then again it is a bit random and not frequent, so maybe a temperamental ECU after being warmed up by the engine....?

RESOLVE!!!!!

So after all that I found the wheel bearing that was installed was the incorrect bearing! Ordered it from a reputable auto parts store in the metro Cincinnati area but it was not to spec. It fit however both sides were black not black & orange...

Did you ever figure this out? I just ran into the same problem with my rear left sensor and F A G bearing. Shop did the work. I verified Red Seal out. I even changed my sensor. Suffering the same ABS light as you. Really don't want to waste time swapping another bearing. Then again, hate driving with error lights.

Hopeful you found a solution.

Let me know. Thanks in advance!
