My water pump went just a few weeks ago and it was at 85k. I replaced the thermostat as well since I was already in there. Both the water pump and thermostat cost $500, both oem. I basically got it for cost price because my buddy owns a small shop so I got it for the price he would pay for the parts.

Water pump for e90 is not cheap, so I would not do it as preventative measure. DIY is a little more challenging on XI, but manageable. You'd have to remove the fan and wheel to get some room to work. Takes about 6 hours, would be easier if you have access to lift.

6 hours to do it?? Me and a buddy of mine did my water pump and thermostat within 2 hours on a lift lol. We didn't have to remove the fan or wheel, and I have an XI

Key word is "on the lift". Now try it on the floor in your garage and see how long it takes. BTW thermostat comes out easy once you at the pump and doesn't add any time to this DIY.

I did the original pump and tstat at over 100K. $500-600 range from Turner which includes the aluminum bolts and some hoses. I did mine outside on ramps in the cold....just in an odd place and took a lot of maneuvering side to side and tool selection to get at it. Not my favorite DIY, but worth saving about a grand!

I just brought a new water pump and thermostat I installed them myself not very much to it some very hard places to reach but I made do now I still a leak worrying if I'm missing something it's always t trial and error I guess any have this problem

At 120k I thanked my thermo and water pump for faithful service and I changed it myself. If I had to pay someone perhaps I would have waited longer. As someone else mentioned, if it fails at the wrong time it will cost you tow, time, inconvenience. It is really up to you.
