Brake Service Required message but iDrive shows tons of pad life?

Yesterday when I started the car, a brake service light came on indicating my brake pads were at the end of their life and needed to be replaced. This is confusing to me because I just changed the front pads and sensors (professionally done at a well respected indy) and my iDrive shows over 30000 miles left on both the front and rear pads.

Any ideas?

Why don't you reset the service reminder?

Update: this morning, the global “brake service required” message is gone except for a split second upon startup. However, my iDrive now indicates my rear brakes only have 474 miles of life left on them and that I need them replaced immediately. How strange that just days ago, the life was listed at 30,000 miles+????

short the brake service sensor... bmw put them there for people who doesn't even know what brake pads look like.

all you have to do is look at the caliper and see how much brake pads are left. you don't even have to take off the wheels to do that. pads are visible from the outside.

Well, I checked all of the car’s service records (I am the second owner) and see that the rear pads have never been replaced. I’m at 82,000 miles so I’ve just scheduled my Indy to replace the pads and rotors in the rear on Friday. Goin with Akebono pads and rotors like I did for the front last summer.

You might have a faulty sensor, early in my E90's life I had a fault sensor suddenly indicate I had 400~ miles of front pad life left when I was 430 miles out of town, took it to the dealership and everything indicated a fault in the sensor. And visually check the pads too.
