mountain biking help me choice!
Hi all, I'm hoping there is a few mountain bikers on here. I'm after advice on what bikes I should check out? I live in the east Midlands so Sherwood pines is local, I plan on doing cannock and dalby at some point this year. I currently have a hardtail carrera fury.
I had a giant trance 27.5 2 the 2014 model on demo this being full suspension I really enjoyed it, felt nice to me but don't have much experience with full sus! I still like my hardtail but the full sus was something else. Now most of my friends have hardtail now one question will I find it boring being the only guy on a full sus? Also I'm not very fit as a rider, I thought I was ok but when out with my trainer from my courses and he was absolutely flying ahead! Admittedly it was a 800ft climb in one go and he is use to it, but still I should be able to maintain a decent climb. Basically surgestions as to what model and make is good, full or hardtail. Also what size wheel? I would like to spend about 1500 maybe 1800 at a push Cheers Dan |

I bought full and sort of regret it. Yes it's nice and soft when you're going downhill but to be honest, most of the time, I'm pedalling somewhere. The rear suspension just seems to suck all the energy out of you instead of going to the back wheel. Yes you can lock it, but it's not the same as a decent hardtail.
I like Trek's lineup. |

Thanks for you input, that's what my thoughts were on the full sus. You lose your power, but to be honest I never noticed on the giant. Although it had the later 3 position shocker so I think it fully locked out.
I will have a look at the trek range |

Speaking of which, I am trying to swap my 2006 Trek Fuel 90 for something of similar age/spec but a hardtail. To be honest, it's more about being able to fit a toddler seat on the back every now and again!
It's this one if anyone is interested. http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/catego...-90-mtb-10752/ |

I have a giant anthem similar to the trance but only 4" travel and love it find it good for trails and light downhill as it lacks the travel for the big stuff and with the maestro suspension system and lockout have no problems going uphills.

I made the move from hardtail to FS a couple of months ago and I wouldn't go back tbh.
It is slightly harder to climb but not enough to put me off. Really only you can make the choice out of which style you prefer. You can save your self a lot of money going for a hardtail, but sometimes these itches just need to be scratched lol. |

In your price range I would definitely go with a high end hard tail....full suspension at that price point would be sub-par IMO.
Hard tail is for a more pure ride and better exercise and full suspension helps to get over more rough terrain with minimal fatigue and comfort so either choice really depends on terrain you ride and which you prefer. I'm a hard tail purist.....so I'm slightly biased lol! Full suspension is comfy for downhill though!! |

I like my hardtail but I did like the full suspension. Looked at 2014 cube ams 29er which looked nice! I'm going to check je james near me tonight and look at hardtails aswell.

What if you want a Labrador with the bike? Do they only supply Jack Russell with this model?

Go with a good hard tail...you can get full deore grouppo spec in you price range, and it will be much lighter for climbs with more fit individuals
May I suggest a canadian brand,Brodie makes a fantastic steel bike. You should be able to get a tiger for the money your looking to spend, awesome bike....it's what I own...so I'm a tad biased, but I have had many other popular brands and this one rides like a champ |

I have a Trek Fuel EX7 full suspension. Just had the rear shock replaced for free from the somewhat pants Fox PR2 DRCV to an RP23.
With either shock though, I've never found the suspension bouncy or energy sapping - but then I don't really ride it on the road unless I have to. |
